USA-Swimming Names 8 to Youth Olympics Roster

USA-Swimming has named their roster for this summer’s Youth Olympic Games, which will take place in Singapore.

Initially, it seemed as the United States would not be participating in the games, over concerns about whether the level of competition would be worth sending a roster and conflicts with the 2010 Pan-American Games scheduling.

We first reported several weeks ago that USA-Swimming had reached an agreement with the YOG organizing committee that would allow American contingent to leave the games early in order to be at the Pan-Pacific Championships or Junior Pan-Pacific Championships. USA-Swimming has decided that they would simply send a group of swimmers who would not be in the Pan-Pac event, thus allowing the athletes the full experience of competing at an international event.

The Youth Olympic Games are sponsored by the International Olympic Committee, and will feature many innovations including co-ed relays, and will give  young swimmers great exposure to a high-level meet.

The American roster was selected from the top-four-ranked male and female swimmers who met the following criteria:

  1. Achieved YOG “A” standards,
  2. Were born in 1992/1993 (males), or 1993/1994 (females)
  3. Weren’t competing at the Pan-Pac Games, and
  4. Weren’t members of the 2009-2010 National Youth Team.
