USA Swimming has announced the 2023-2024 US National Team roster which includes 94 athletes. That’s five fewer than the 99 who were named to the team last year, indicating more athletes qualifying in more events than last year.

The list is led by new pro Kate Douglass, who qualified in six events. Katie Ledecky and Regan Smith each qualified in four events, while seven other swimmers qualified in four events.

“The 2023-24 National Team roster truly showcases the depth of American swimming,” USA Swimming National Team Managing Director Lindsay Mintenko said. “A young group of emerging swimmers will learn from veteran leaders as the athletes prepare for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Swimming and the Olympic Games next summer.”

Athletes qualified for this year’s team by being one of the top six fastest eligible swimmers in each individual Olympic event from January 1, 2023 through September 9, 2023.

The roster is a young one, with an average age of 21.7 years old. That includes 27 debutants making their first-ever National Team rosters.

The 94 athletes represent 45 USA Swimming clubs and 22 different states. 12 are current American Record holders in long course, while six are current World Record holders in long course.

The roster includes open water national teamers, who were named in May 2023 and are active through May 1, 2024.

Benefits of membership on the National Team include access to Elite Athlete Health Insurance, Direct Athlete Support funding (for the top 28 ranked male and female athletes), travel assistance to national meets, and access to the Olympic Training Center.

  • US Senior National Team debutants are marked with an asterisk (*)

What are the odds that Katie Grimes goes pro? I don’t think I can recall any athlete as elite as her that’s taken this long to commit. Unless she’s just really taking her time with this, or she’s going to stanford, I’m very curious.

There have even been a good number of stanford commits from this class who have posted their decisions so who knows. In the days of NIL, going pro isnt quite as advantageous as it used to be, ie already with a TYR sponsorship for grimes and a large number of other opportunities as we have seen olympic sport athletes with big name deals with Nike, adidas, Visa etc.

Unless Grimes is planning to do a top football commit type commitment with a live stream of her choosing a hat (please do this please).

Looking at college social media accounts, it’s humorous and sad how many are claiming THE MOST SWIMMERS on the team from college X. Those swimmers attend the schools, are currently at the school, used to train there, will be going there in the future, thought about going there, once took a trip there, once drove through the state …….it’s pretty sad. Lying with statistics is the course I believe. You know which ones I’m talking about …. cough, cough.

You must never turn on the news or read any other media because it seems like that is marketing/self-marketing 101. Take Vivek Ramaswamy who will put out graphics comparing his 7mill raised for his campaign against other candidates when in reality 5mill was raised of his own money, or Biden who will include jobs that came back post-Covid as created jobs during his Presidency.

You always spin the narrative in your favor.

Gotta say that as one of the open water swimmers listed above it’s incredibly disappointing that we weren’t even included with the complete roster.

Open water wasn’t mentioned in the original article at all.

I appreciate swimswam adding open water after the fact. My comment was directed at open water’s exclusion from the official roster on usa swimming’s website.

Congratulations, you deserve the same recognition and I am sure swimswam regrets their oversight.
