USA Swimming has named Matt Kredich form the University of Tennessee (women) and Mike Bottom from the University of Michigan (men) as the head coaches for the 2013 World University Games squads in Kazan Russia. The swimming portion of the multi-sport event will run July 10th-16th in Kazan, Russia.

Both Bottom and Kredich, at the end of the summer, each made big-time headlines as they took over newly-combined co-ed programs at their respective universities. In Russia, however, each will go back to their specialty, as Kredich leads the women and Bottom the men.

Their staffs are rounded out with a trio of collegiate coaches serving as assistants for the men: Kelly Kremer from Minnesota, Arizona assistant Rick DeMont, and Rich DeSelm from North Carolina. The women have one collegiate coach, Carol Capitani who is in her first year as a head coach with the University of Texas; and then supplement the staff with two club coaches, Kevin Blum from Coronado-Navy Swim Association and Paul Stafford from the Terrapins Swim Team. Blum, until recently, was the coach and founder of the Rattler Swim Club that is the home squad for team members Meghan Hawthorne and Andrea Kropp, whereas Stafford coaches Chelsea Chenault, who is a USC commit.

Kredich’s representatives include Kelsey Floyd, while Bottom has three on the roster with Sean Ryan, Kyle Whitaker, and Michael Wynalda.

The World University Games roster is made up of the top finishers who are entering college, through one-year out of college, from last year’s U.S. Open. They will be pitted against the top student-athletes in the world.

My understanding is that the “University” part is very loose, it can be anyone who ever swam for a university, is committed to swim for one in the future, or even trained at one, I think.
