USA Swimming has announced the roster of swimmers that will be attending the 2011 National Select Camp that begins tomorrow at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

This National Select Camp is something that the new USA Swimming National Team Director Frank Busch really emphasized at this year’s USA Swimming convention. Athletes are invited based on their performances from Jr. Nationals, where the top two finishers in each event without any international/National Team/Jr. National Team experience. Additionally, four males and four females are invited based on their IMX scores. All invitees must be 16 or younger as of the end of August.

This is a great opportunity for some of our country’s young talent, that doesn’t already have access to USA Swimming services, to really accelerate their learning and training. Amongst the topics on the agenda is much discussion about the physiological nature of being an elite athlete, as well as nutrition and race analysis.

As always, the lineup this year is loaded with coaches from some of the biggest-name youth programs in the country. David Krotiak of the Fox Valley Swim Team (Kevin Cordes) will head the men’s group, and Allison Beebe of First Colony (Simone Manuel, Romy Landeck) will head the women’s coaching staff.

This year, the swimmers will get a special treat, as Michael Phelps, Allison Schmitt, and much of the rest of the North Baltimore squad are also at the Olympic Training Center getting some focused, altitude work in. Chloe Sutton, one of the most popular swimmers on the women’s team, is also in town. That will really enhance the experience to see how hard those swimmers are training.

For those of you who like good swimming family connections, there’s at least one name on this list – Peter Kropp – who will be interesting to you. He of the Rattler Swim Club (and his coach Kevin Blum) will both be at the camp, and he’s the younger-brother of National Team breaststroker Andrea Kropp.
