Here’s a peak at the 2012-2013 USA Swimming National Team, which features the top 6 swimmers in each event from the combined results of the U.S. Olympic Trials, the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, and the 2012 U.S. Open in Indianapolis.
Note that some of these swimmers may be retiring, but retirements don’t factor into National Team selection, though it does factor into Athlete Partnership Agreement eligibility: athletes must be actively training to receive the higher stipend from USA Swimming.
Members of this team receive a number of services; USA Swimming hasn’t released the full services available to the 2012-2013 team, but last year it included airfare reimbursement for altitude training, career assistance programs, a monthly stipend (both in the APA and out of the APA), the opportunity to qualify for elite athletes health insurance, a massage therapist at all big national meets, reimbursement for travel to Grand Prix meets. For the full list of benefits available, check out this document from USA Swimming.

Thank you for your answer and especially in french! But I didn’t talk about the national junior team but the little roster of american junior swimmers for the world cup in Moscow and Berlin. Almost every year now USA sends a few young swimmers to take experience. Is there already a list? It’s just my question.
je ne sais pas?
Bobo, The team was selected by taking 18U swimmers who are ranked top 50 in an olympic event. Many of us have declined the trip though.
It’s crazy to think that Alyssa Anderson isn’t in the National team even though she is a Olympic gold medalist from London!
Yeah, I always thought swimmers who qualified for LC Worlds or Olympics should be automatically on the National Team, like they do with open water…
Kudos to the coaches like Greg Troy who give credit to the developmental club coaches who trained these swimmers before they got to him at Florida. Looks like unc did the same thing. I wish there was more clarity on this. So many of us swim fans make bold statements about coaches and their programs based on who they coached. Too bad there is not a better way.
I noticed that all of the Gators swam for their “home club” at Olympic Trials and US Open.
Just curious….how can a swimmer be both on the National Team and the National Jr. Team at the same time? Also, some of the kids named to the National Jr. Team will be turning 19 in a month or so – thought you had to be 18 yrs. or YOUNGER to make a National Jr. Team? Have the rules changed?
Rules are:
Athletes must be 18U at the start date of the 2012 Junior National Championships.
Athletes starting University in Fall 2012 are eligible to make this team; athletes who have completed one year of University are not eligible.
Athletes who competed at the Olympic Games, World Championships [LCM or SCM], World University Games, Pan American Games or Pan Pacs for the USA National Team are not eligible to be named to this team.
I don’t see anything about duplicity.
New National Junior Team posted today as well…
What happens when athletes retire, do new names bump up to the national team?
I hope Berens is not retiring! Anthony Ervin posted a video on FB stating that he would do the World Cups and the SC World Champs and confirmed on Twitter. So I hope he won’t be retiring again anytime soon!
yeah, i think Ervin has a lot left in the tank and he hasn’t reached his full potential. he should at least give the 2013 championships a go. but the USA men’s 50 free is pretty deep, he would have to work hard. especially since Adrian has found a new gear and is swimming well.
Too bad that the performances at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships are not considered. These athletes were asked to represent Team USA at the international competition. Many of these athletes main focus for the summer was the JPPC meet. Many of the swimmers had outstanding performances and represented Team USA very well.
Did the IOC want these swimmers to go to the US Open to perform their best and than swim mediocre at the JPPC . I would like to know the rationale for not accepting times at a major international meet for our junior swimmers.
It’s also too bad that performances from Junior Nationals aren’t considered. Did Allie Szekely make a poor financial decision by not going to nationals and instead swam 2:26.35 at Junior nationals the following week where it didn’t county for $? If she had done it a week earlier she would have bumped Leverenz.
Leah Smith’s 4:07 from Jr Pan Pacs should put her on the National Team. She was wearing the American flag on her cap when she did the time, and she skipped Open in order to best represent that American flag. I am sure there are other examples, but this was the female swimmer of the meet.
It has always been based on just one or two meets, probably because it encourages stepping up for the selection meet. Most (if not all) these swimmers also swam at trials so they had their chance along with everyone else. It is not unusual to have two big meets you have to be able to swim lights out in that are close together.
In college, it’s conference and NCAA’s
Last year for some, it was Nationals then University games, or the US Open and PanAm’s. This year it was OT’s and then for the lucky few, it was the Olympics. It is a tough choice for coaches to make but these are young swimmers and I have no… Read more »
Jr Pan Pac kids stepped up and made the team based off their performance at Trials. If everything was based off Trials, I wouldn’t question the selection procedure.
The discrepancy I see is where those who did not make a team had a second chance for the National Team at the US Open. To use your words, there were some Jr Pan Pac kids who “stepped up” and “swam lights out” at their second meet while representing the US, and those times from Jr Pan Pacs did not count for the National Team.
I think Kalisz was ranked in the top 16? I also believe conger was among the top 16? so 3×18 and unders were in the top 16.
Kalisz is 18, not under 18 and Conger just missed top16.
