Today USA Swimming has unveiled their new National Junior Team Program 2020 Quad Plan.
The 2020 Quad Plan is a plan that spans over the next 4 years leading up to the 2020 Olympic Games. It is designed to give athletes and coaches an overview of the meets that the National Junior Team will compete in over the next 4 years.
Each of the 4 years always starts out with the selection process which takes place during September. The document also shows that USA Swimming is planning on implementing the same selection criteria over the next 4 years.
This year, the National Junior Team only has only one meet until the the main end-of-season meet, which in 2017 is the FINA World Junior Championships. Before the World Championships this year is 18 & Under World Cup Championships. Although athletes may be on the National Junior Team, they are not guaranteed a spot at these meets, which tend to be very competitive. For the 18 & Under World Cup, the team that is taken will not exceed 10 men and 10 women, meaning at least 16 men and 16 women will be left at home. Some will also likely not qualify for FINA World Junior Championships, as the maximum amount of swimmers that can be taken is 26 for the men’s and women’s team.
Each year there is a major meet at the end of the season which will be the team’s focus; Junior Pan Pacs in 2018, World Junior Championships again in 2019, and the Summer Olympics in 2020.
Each year’s schedule reveals the team, date, competition location, selection meets, general selection requirements, and team size for each event.
