USA Women’s Water Polo Rallies To Defeat The Netherlands 8-6

The USA Women’s National Team rallied from an early 2-0 deficit and multiple one-goal deficits for an 8-6 win over the Netherlands at Loyola Marymount University. Maddie Musselman (Newport Beach, CA/UCLA/CDM Aquatics) scored two goals in the win with Ashleigh Johnson (Miami, FL/Princeton/NYAC) and Gabby Stone (La Jolla, CA/Stanford/SD Shores) combining in net for six saves. Team USA returns to action on Tuesday night against China at Foothill High School in Tustin, CA at 7:30pm pt. The Netherlands started off strong opening up a 2-0 lead before the United States rallied with two straight goals from Musselman and Kiley Neushul (Isla Vista, CA/Stanford/NYAC) to tie the game at 2-2. The Netherlands added a goal not long after and held a one goal lead going into second.

Late in the first half Lizette Rozeboom scored for the Netherlands to make it 4-2 but Jordan Raney (Manhattan Beach, CA/Stanford/Huntington Beach WP) got the deficit to one by halftime with a tally. Musselman opened the scoring in the third to tie the game at 4-4 but Maud Megens hit for the Netherlands to go in front 5-4 after three.

The teams traded goals through the first part of the fourth quarter leading to a tie game at 6-6 with a little over four minutes to play. The USA defense then held the Netherlands scoreless while Makenzie Fischer (Laguna Beach, CA/Stanford/SET) and Rachel Fattal (Seal Beach, CA/UCLA/SOCAL) added goals to retake the lead and secure the game.

Team USA went 4/10 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty while the Netherlands went 2/6 on power plays and 1/1 on penalties.
