USC Looking Into Alleged On-Deck Incident Involving Coach Jeremy Kipp

A source close to the USC swimming & diving team has told SwimSwam that head coach Jeremy Kipp was removed from pool deck during a practice on Tuesday, April 20.

According to other reports, Kipp allegedly kicked a water bottle that hit a swimmer in the face.

However, another source disputes that he was removed from deck.

USC Athletics issued the following statement on the matter:

“Whenever a concern is raised about a coach or staff member, USC Athletics takes it seriously and looks into it. However, we do not discuss individual situations because of the confidential nature of personnel issues.”

-USC Athletics

Kipp was hired as USC’s head coach in May 2020 after spending two seasons as the head coach of Northwestern University. In taking over as head coach, Kipp succeeded Dave Salo, who served as the Trojan head coach for 14 years, after previously working on his staff as an assistant from 2008-2015.

The USC women and men finished 22nd and 27th, respectively, at the 2021 NCAA Championships during Kipp’s first season at the helm.

As a former college swimmer and the parent of a swimmer that will soon begin the process of choosing a school and coach, we obviously have been doing research. A simple Google search showed me this coach landed an Austrian Olympian and some quality transfers that want to swim for him. Must be a real tyrant….

A simple search will also tell you about Kipp’s long history of bullying, intimidation, harassment, shaming, and physical violence. If that’s your idea of acceptable behavior for a coach and mentor for your daughter, I feel sorry for her.

Quality 5th year senior transfers won’t build a program and are just using swimming to get into a tough grad school. They won’t be a factor in recruiting or building a positive team dynamic. If USC under Kipp scored an American Olympian, I would be impressed! Austria has only won 12 medals at the Olympic Games and 9 of those medals came before 1912 so I’ll take my odds with a good US swimmer over an Austrian one.
Elite swimmers will pass on Power Trip Kipp and his physical and verbal abusive coaching as American swimmers and families won’t put up with this behavior. Social media and online message boards are flushing coaches like Kipp out and making their… Read more »

100% correct. The most discouraging thing about all of this is that USC hasn’t taken action and stood up for their swimmers. Sure not the Trojan Family they profess to be. Absolutely mind boggling.

His continued presence on the deck casts a dark cloud of emotional gloom over the program. Word is that the team was training for the LA Open and because Salo is influential in SoCal USA Swimming and hates Kipp, they were kept out of the meet. That screwed up plans for a lot of kids training at USC this summer who were planning to shave and taper for that particular competition. Kipp’s association with USC continues to hurt the kids and impair their development and progress. There is no salvaging his career at USC and everyone knows it. Everyday that he continues to be there sets the program back further and further. This is a horribly sad situation and I… Read more »
