University of Southern California has traveled into Arizona territory to take on two PAC-12 foes. First up was Arizona State (Arizona tomorrow). The Trojan men and women were able to sweep the Sun Devils; the women won 167-128, and the men, 171-119.
Women’s Meet
The first event of the day was the 400 medley relay, with USC’s A team taking the top spot but six seconds. Kendyl Stewart – 53.57, Kasey Carlson – 59.65, Jasmine Tosky – 53.16, and Kasie Wilk – 48.51 teamed up to finish in 3:34.89.
The B team from Trojans were second in 3:40.85. Lexie Malazdrewicz led off in 54.98, Evan Swenson was 1:02.24, Stina Gardell an impressive 53.59 butterfly leg and Henriette Stenkvist anchored in 50.04.
Arizona States B team finished in third, 3:47.05.
Distance standout for the Sun Devils Tristin Baxter won the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:01.91. Nikki Chang was second in 10:05.91 for USC.
Meghan Hawthorne put a 1:48.45 200 freestyle for the event win. Hawthorne has been an IM and breaststroke specialist, but that swim there displayed her ability to swim freestyle on the relays for the Trojans in March. Her teammate Stenkvist was second in 1:49.27.
Juanita Barreto for ASU for third, 1:50.33.
Stewart clocked a NCAA B standard in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 54.73. Melanie Busch was second in 55.47 for ASU, and Malazdrewicz was a bit off her relay time here finishing in 56.54.
The Sun Devils had another event victory in the 100 breaststroke. Alex Popa won the event in 1:04.12. For the Trojans, who have Carlson, instead had Jasmine Tosky here; she finished second in 1:04.44.
USC had a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 butterfly. The Trojans have had a history of strong butterflies, 3 NCAA finalists in 2012, and Maggie D’Innocenzo, Andrea Kropp and Lynette Lim led the charge today. Their times were 2:01.50, 2:03.23 and 2:03.54 respectively.
Carlson won the 50 freestyle, with a B time at 22.93 – very quick for this time in the season. Busch was second at 23.39. And Stewart was third in 23.43.
Kasie Wilk, Jasmine Tosky and Chelsea Chenault led another sweep by the Trojans in the 100 freestyle. Wilk won in 50.77, Tosky second at 51.21 and Chenault in third at 51.61.
Barreto for the Sun Devils was fourth in 51.77.
Gardell shower her versatility with a win in the 200 backstroke at 2:00.28. Busch was back in the pool for the Sun Devils and got second in 2:02.07.
Hawthorne had another individual victory with a NCAA B time of 2:14.53. Carlson was behind her in 2:16.04. ASU had the third spot with Tory Houston at 2:17.67.
Baxter made it two for two in the distance races, taking the 500 freestyle in 4:50.48. Lim was USC’s best finisher in second in 4:53.65. Stenkvist was third in 4:55.60 over Jamie Friderichs from ASU who finished in 4:57.51.
In her third individual victory of the day, Hawthorne had a great swim to top off her day in the 100 butterfly. Her final time was 54.79. In a Trojan sweep, Tosky was second in 56.32 and Kropp in third in 57.45.
With USC exhibition swimming, Baxter had the win in the 200 IM, 2:05.57. Gardell had the fastest time overall with a B cut of 2:00.18.
ASU’s A 200 freestyle won the meet in 1:34.82. USC exhibition swam the event, and split 22.3, 22.3, 22.4, 23.2 with a team of Carlson, Wilk, Evan Swenson and Chenault for the fastest time of 1:30.30.
Men’s Meet
The Trojan men kicked off their first meet of the season with a 1-2 finish in the 400 medley relay. The A team of Luca Spinazzola – 47.16, Morten Klarskov – 54.82, Maclin Davis – 48.07, and Santo Condorelli – 43.87 won in a time of 3:13.92.
Notably, Chase Bloch on the B relay split 47.93 on the butterfly leg, and Cristian Quintero was 43.57 on the anchor leg. There final overall time was 3:15.85.
ASU was third in 3:21.39.
In the first individual event, the men of Troy swept the 1000 freestyle. Ted Singley led the effort with a time of 9:23.08. Reed Malone was second in 9:35.24, and Nick Johnson in 9:38.19.
As one of the top returners in the NCAA in the 200 freestyle, Dimitri Colupaev won the event in a time of 1:38.56. His teammate Cary Wright was second, 1:40.82.
The Sun Devils finished third and fourth with Barkley Perry, 1:41.89, and Sean Kao, 1:42.47.
Spinazzola won the 100 backstroke, finishing in 49.16. Jeff Swanston was behind his teammate for second in 50.63. Just behind Swanston was David Adalsteinsson from ASU, 50.77.
Sean Mulroy won the 100 breaststroke for the Trojans. He bested out Thibaut Capitaine from ASU to finish 55.71 to 56.54.
USC had two 56 efforts from Steven Stumph, 56.65, and Sergio Lujan-Rivera, 56.67.
Arizona State had their first victory with Alex Coci. He registered a B time in the 200 butterfly of 1:47.18. Michael Domagala and Dakota Hodgson were second and third for USC, 1:48.26 and 1:49.24, respectively.
The Trojans went to Quintero and Colupaev for their sprints, with the obviously absence of Vlad Morozov. First was Quintero in 20.36, then Colupaev in 20.49. Under the :21 mark was Richard Bohus from ASU in 20.81 for third.
Quintero came back after the break to win the 100 freestyle in 44.40. Condorelli was second in 44.78 and Spinazzola completed the Trojan sweep in 45.84.
Wright had a win of his own in the 200 backstroke. He finished in 1:48.29, and his teammate Swanston was second, 1:49.96. ASU’s Barkley Perry was third, 1:50.31.
USC kept the ball rolling, with a win from Stumph in the 200 breaststroke. He finished in 2:02.06. Ridge Altman was second for the Trojans in 2:05.12. Capitaine for ASU was third, 2:06.73.
Colupaev won his second event in the 500 freestyle finishing in 4:36.40. Domagala and Johnson were second and third (4:36.94, 4:40.97). USC than began to exhibition swim the rest of the meet.
Coci had the fastest time in the 100 butterfly, winning the event for ASU. With another B time, he won the 100 butterfl yin 48.24. Davis was the only other swimmer under 50, finishing in 49.29.
In what was a very close touch out, Dalby had the second fastest time in the 200 IM, but had the win. His time was 1:51.93, to USC’s Klarskov, who was 1:51.56.
Rounding out the meet was the 200 freestyle relay. ASU’s A team won in 1:23.24. USC’s exhibition A & B relay had three 19-splits – Quintero (19.96), Condorelli (19.67), Domagala (19.94).
