USC Will Be Road-Warriors in Fall Semester While Pool Renovations Wrap Up

While the renamed Uytengsu Aquatics Center is undergoing its huge, $16-million renovation this fall, the USC men’s and women’s swim teams will have an entire semester of thin competition and lots of road meets. Specifically, every intercollegiate meet prior to the holiday break is on the road before Uytengsu is ready to unveil its new look.

The Trojans actually have a historical pattern of alternating one year with a big road schedule and one year of a big home schedule, and this year’s schedule generally fits that pattern anyway.

The USC women, who have been 3rd at NCAA’s two of the last three years, will be a little busier than their male counterparts in the fall. Both teams open in two weeks with an intrasquad meet, which will be one of only two home-dates (along with the Homecoming Alumni Relays meet in mid-November) in 2013.

The women will then take a select squad to the SMU Classic on October 18th and 19th, where they enter two swimmers per event, while the rest of the team heads to Pullman, Washington for a dual with Washington State.

The Trojans will then take on the Arizona double, first against Arizona State in Tempe and then Arizona in Tucson. The divers will be back a week later for the Wildcat Diving Invitational. That means that the USC men, 4th at last year’s NCAA Championships and with the #1 recruiting class in the country, won’t see another team until the second week of November: by far the latest start in the country.

USC will be at the Texas Invitational for their mid-season taper this year. This is a popular mid-year stop for them, though Texas didn’t host the meet in 2012 as they were hosting Winter Nationals instead.

After their winter break, USC will make up for lost-time with a run of home meets. On January 10th and 11th, the women will host Utah and Wisconsin in back-to-back dual meets, (the men will only swim Wisconsin that weekend), before the men go to their edition of the SMU Classic the next weekend. Another week after that the women welcome fellow Pac-12 powerhouses Cal and Stanford in for duals on January 31st and February 1st, and the men host the same two-some another week after that on February 7th and 8th.

A cross-town rivalry match-up with UCLA on February 15th will end the regular season for the women. The men will finish against Utah for the third-straight year with a two-day dual on February 21st and 22nd.

The women will then go to the Pac-12 Championships in Federal Way from the 26th of February through March 1st, and the men will go a week later in the same pool.

Women’s NCAA’s are March 20th-22nd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and men’s NCAA’s are March 27th-29th in Austin, Texas.

Note that all meets in January are tentative of construction being on time. The targeted completion is in February for the official grand opening, but the Trojans are counting on it being usable for meets before then.

Men wrap up season vs. Utah – same as last two years….

Seems reasonable. Close the season with an intra-PAC 12 meet against a friendly non-threatening team to do some final honing before PAC-12 champs and give some of the borderline swimmers a chance to get cut times.

It will be interesting to see how USC plays their top freshman class in this one. Will they allow the Utah sprinter, Soedel, to absolutely destroy them for a third year in a row in the sprints? They sat Vlad out the last couple years.

Where are they practicing?

Same pool. There is construction going but they can still swim at the pool. No interference yet.
