Utah High School State: Skyline breaks 4 state records including Lillian Moore’s 54.61 100 butterfly to sweep 4A

The Utah High School State Swim meet took place over the weekend, its inaugural season in the new four-class format. 2A, the class for the smallest schools of the bunch, was added for the first time this season.

Class 4A, the second-biggest class, provided some of the biggest fireworks. Skyline High School won both the boys and girls titles, breaking four state records along the way. Most notable of those was senior and BYU commit Lillian Moore‘s 54.61 in the 100 fly.

In 5A (big schools), the Brighton boys and Viewmont girls took home team titles. Park City swept class 3A, breaking three girls state records, and North Summit High (girls) and Rowland Hall (boys) picked up the inaugural 2A titles.

The state’s championship central is here, with links to each classes meet and previous years’ results.

2A Meet

North Summit High picked up the win for the girls, spurred on by sprinter Ariel Fitch. The senior won the 50 free (25.79) and 100 free (56.86) for North Summit and also put up the fastest split on the winning 200 free relay. North Summit also got a win in the 200 free from junior Stephanie Abdalla.

On the boys’ side, Rowland Hall picked up the big win, sweeping the free relays and getting double individual wins from senior Lachlan Murphy and freshman Benjamin Willmore. Murphy won the sprints, going 22.68 in the 50 and 50.14 in the 100, while Willmore took the 200 IM (1:59.63) and 500 free (4:51.13). Rowland freshman Issac Landau also won the 100 breast.

Rowland’s Kelsey Oliver also won two events, taking the 200 IM and 500 free for the girls, while also swimming on the winning 200 medley and 400 free relays to pick up four total titles.

Grand County High swept the butterflies, with Alexa Pierce winning for the girls and Jackson Knowles taking the boys race. Pierce doubled up by winning the 100 back as well.

This was the first year that a class 2A meet was swum, meaning the top time in each event will stand as the class 2A state record.

4A Meet

Skyline High School swept the titles in class 4A on the strength of relays – the school won 5 of the 6 relays contested, losing only the boys 200 medley to Wasatch. The Skyline boys were led by senior James Sorensen, who won the 200 free (1:41.43) and 100 free (47.40). He also led off both winning free relays, one of which, the 200, set a new class 4A state record.

The Skyline girls swept all three relays, touching out Wasatch for the 200 free and dominating the other two races. That, combined with senior Lillian Moore‘s crushing 54.61 win in the 100 fly, was enough to power Skyline to the team title. Moore will swim for BYU next season – her 100 fly and the 200 and 400 free relays were all new class 4A state records.

Springville senior John Morris won a pair of races. He went 1:53.96 to win the 200 IM and added a 58.71 win in the 100 breaststroke. The other double winner on the boys side was Mountain Crest’s Porter Roe, who won the 50 free (21.59) and 100 back (52.37).

Highland’s Zoe Phillips set a new 4A record in the 100 back with a 56.91. She also won the 200 IM in 2:04.85. Mountain Crest senior Hailey Pabst won two of her own races, the 50 free and 100 free.

5A Meet

The boys of Brighton High rolled to a state title on the strength of their freestylers. The team won the 200 and 400 free relays in dominating fashion to take the state title without winning an individual event.

On the girls’ side, Viewmont High took home the trophy, winning two of the last four events to seal the meet. Sophomore Mariah Gassaway won the 100 breast in 1:04.23 just after leading off Viewmont’s state champion 200 free relay, and that double was enough to pick up the team win.

American Fork High School had two of the top individual swimmers of the boys meet. Steven Okelberry, a junior, won the 200 free (1:43.97) and 100 free (47.10) while senior Ethan Pollock took the 200 IM (1:55.53) and 500 free (4:41.21). American Fork ended up 6th overall.

For the girls, Lone Peak High was the runners-up by just 12 points. They made a huge charge, winning three events and a relay in th early goings. Junior Katie Smith was the catalyst. After swimming the fly leg of the winning 200 medley relay, she won the 200 IM (2:08.20) and 100 fly (56.05) for Lone Peak, while her teammate Samantha Patterson won the 500 free.

Riverton junior Abbey Sorensen dominated the long-axis sprint races, going 23.51 to crush the 50 free field and taking the 100 back in 56.97. She also swam on the 200 free relay that was a very narrow second-place, but was disqualified. Sorensen went 23.49 leading that team off.
