The Utah men and women were victorious over UNLV this weekend, with the men winning 166-134 and the women winning 195-105.
Utah had multiple swimmers take more than one event win. On the women’s side, senior Traycie Schwartz took the 100 back in 57.04 and came back a few events later to win the 50 free in 23.97. Amanda Barrett won the 1000 free early on in 10:28.84, then doubled up in the 100 back late in 2:04.09. The Utes swept the breaststrokes, with freshman Stina Colleau going 1:04.48 in the 100 and 2:19.85. Utah went 1-2-3 in both breaststroke events. Finally Utah’s Kersten Merry took both diving boards, 293.55 on 1m and 290.93 on 3m.
The UNLV women swept the relays, but were only able to win two of the remaining individual events. Jessica Heim went 1:52.87 to beat a pair of Utah challengers in the 200 free. Katelyne Herrington won the 100 fly convincingly in 55.23.
Utah also pulled off wins in the 200 fly (Petra Soininen, 2:03.61), 100 free (Giuliana Gigliotti, 52.56), 500 free (Sami Zuch, 5:02.93), and 200 IM (Brianna Francis 2:06.32).
On the men’s side, Utah picked up two wins from distance specialist Bence Kiraly in the 1000, where he went 9:16.69, and the 500 where he went 4:39.40. Nick Soedel also won twice, going 1:39.56 in the 200 and 44.72 in the 100. The Utes almost swept all of the freestyle events, losing only the 50 where UNLV’s Dillon Virva went 20.33 to beat Soedel.
UNLV senior Giacomo Gremizzi won twice for the Rebels, going 1:50.17 in the 200 IM and 2:05.34 in the 200 breast. The Rebels swept the breaststroke events as David Szele won the 100 in 56.12.
Henrique Machado won the 100 back, barely touching out Utah’s Kristian Krohn 49.46 to 49.49. Krohn struck back in the 200, winning easily in 1:47.30.
UNLV’s Balint Batka took the 200 fly in 1:50.40. Dave Fraser of Utah took the 100 fly in 50.16.
Utah won both of the diving events, with sophomores Jake Crayne and Josiah Purss going back and forth on both boards. Purss won on 1m with a score of 365.25 while Crayne took 3m, scoring 357.90.
The teams split the relays, with UNLV winning the opening 200 medley in 1:29.78 and Utah taking the closing 200 free relay in 1:22.65.
