Utah Men Prepare For Pac-12 Championship

The University of Utah men’s swimming team will compete this week at the 2017 Pac-12 Championships in Federal Way, Wash. Competition begins tomorrow, March 1, and will run through Saturday, March 4.

Utah Notes
The men’s team is 4-4 overall and 0-3 in Pac-12 competition. The Utes have non-conference wins over UNLV (192-100), Wyoming (171-129), Denver (177-143) and BYU (189-109).
Junior Jack Burton leads the Utes with the most individual wins. Against USC, he took first in the 100 breast with a time of 53.64, matching the school record set by Ken Tiltges at the 2014 Pac-12 Championships. He has six first-place finishes in the event. He has also accumulated five first-place finishes along with two top-five finishes in the 200 breast
Freshmen Rahiti De Vos and Matteo Sogne have each racked up five individual wins this season. De Vos has four in the 500 free and one in the 1,000 free to go along with 12 top-five finishes.
Sogne has a victory in the 1,650 free, two in the 500 free and two in the 1,000 free. He has seven top-five finishes for the Utes.
Four Utes have ammassed three first-place finishes. Daniel McArthur has individual wins in the 100 and 200 back as well as the 200 IM. Nolan Rogers has two wins in the 400 and one in the 200 IM while Liam O’Haimhirgin has captured the 100 free on three occasions and Paul Unger has three wins in the 100 back.
Ethan Dillard (200 IM and 200 back), McKay King (100 back), Colten Montgomery (100 fly) and Austin Phillips (200 free) have also been successful victors this season in the pool.
Utah has eight swimmers who have earned multiple top-five finishes at some point during the season, including Tommy Baker (7), Cole Avery (9), Evan Indahl (4), Brody Lewis (8), Luis Macias (5), Brendan Nguyen (10), Ben Scott (5) and Ganem Tebet (11).
Last Time Out 
The Utes came up short against No.13 USC, 181-118.
McArthur took first in the 200 IM, coming away with a time of 1:48.32. He also took second in the 100 back (47.25). Both times were good enough for NCAA consideration.
Phillips took first in the 200 free touching in at 1:37.78 with De Vos following second (1:38.53). De Vos also took second in the 500 free (4:28.58).
Other second-place finishes put up were by Sogne (1,650 free, 15:18.02), O’Haimhirgin (100 free, 44.61), Dillard (200 IM, 1:49.46) and Montgomery (100 fly, 47.62).
Both relay teams finished in second. In the 200 medley relay, Unger, Burton, Montgomery and King came away with a time of 1:27.50. In the 400 free relay, King, Baker, O’Haimhirgin and Phillips touched in at 2:56.34.
2016 Pac-12 Championships 
Utah men’s swimming team took sixth at last year’s Pac-12 Championships.
Brandon Shreeve took third (19th overall) in the “C” finals for the 500 free, touching in at 4:27.14. Ben Scoot also took third in the “C” finals for the 100 fly (48.56).
In timed trails for the 100 back, Unger set a new school record. He came away with a time of 47.18. Unger would take fifth (13th overall) in the B” finals for the 100 back with a time of 47.86.
In the “B” finals for the 200 IM, McArthur took sixth (14th overall) with a time of 1:47.20. He also took sixth in the 100 back touching in at 48.80.
