Utah hosted UNLV for a combined dual meet last Friday, posting decisive victories in both the men’s and women’s meets.

Utah sprinter Finn O’Haimhirgin swept the men’s sprint events on the day. In the 50 free, O’Haimhirgin clocked a 20.60, touching out UNLV’s Bryson Huey (20.70). O’Haimhirgin then went on to win the 100 free in 45.25, this time touching out UNLV’s Zsolt Szodi (45.50).

O’Haimhirgin was also a key member of Utah’s men’s relays. Andrei Ungur (48.12), Jaek Horner (53.90), Marko Kovacic (47.52), and O’Haimhirgin teamed up in the 400 medley relay, swimming a 3:13.52. UNLV was out-swum on each of the strokes, except breaststroke, where Adnan Beji clocked a speedy 53.23 split for the Rebels.

In the 200 free relay, O’Haimhirgin, Evan VanBrocklin, Ungur, and Lucas Calderon combined for a 1:21.74, narrowly beating UNLV by 0.17 seconds. Unfortunately, accurate splits for the men’s 200 free relay.

The Utes were exceptional in the women’s sprint free events. The women’s 50 free saw a 1-2-3 punch by Utah, led by Reagan Cathcart, who won the race in 23.89. She was just ahead of teammates Madeline Woznick (23.94) and Erin Palmer (23.98). Palmer, a freshman, went on to win the women’s 100 free in 51.92.

The women’s 200 free saw Palmer team up with Woznick, Katie Hale, and Cathcart on Utah’s ‘A’ team, winning the event in 1:33.44. Palmer led off in 23.74, followed by a 23.59 from Woznick, a 23.36 from Hale, and a speedy 22.75 from Cathcart. Hale’s 23.36 was particularly notable, as she swam a 24.91 in the individual 50 free earlier in the meet.

Utah also took the women’s 400 medley relay, swimming a 3:44.94. Norah Hay (56.70), Hilja Schimmel (1:02.54), Summer Stanfield (55.39), and Cathcart (50.31) combined to pick up the win.

UNLV swept the 1000 frees, putting their middle-distance and distance free prowess on display. Rebel freshman Erika Carlson won the women’s 1000 free, swimming a 10:18.74, winning the event by seven seconds. Cameron Castro took the men’s 1000 free in 9:35.16, getting out to an early lead and holding on through the finish.

UNLV also won the women’s 500 free, where Teneka Ash swam a 5:03.59. The Rebels grabbed a second-place finish as well, with freshman Kayleigh Lovell clocking a 5:06.28.

Although he won the men’s 1000 free, Castro would go on to finish fifth in the men’s 500 free, posting a 4:47.28. Evan VanBrocklin led the event, earning a win for Utah with a 4:34.05. VanBrocklin was a double event winner, also taking the men’s 200 fly in 1:50.05.

Summer Stanfield was a three-event winner for the Utes, earning victories in the women’s 200 fly, 200 back, and 200 IM. In the 200 fly, Stanfield posted a 2:02.11, swimming the fastest split in the field on all four 50s, which resulted in a decisive win. She then went on to swim a 1:59.95 in the 200 back, nearly negative splitting the race. Stanfield was out in 59.78 on the first 100, then coming home in 1:00.17 on the second 100.

Stanfield finished off her meet with a 2:03.54 in the women’s 200 IM, leading the field by well over three seconds. She was great on the front half of the race, splitting 26.86 on fly and 31.03 on back for a 57.88 on the first 100.

Ute Hilja Schimmel swept the women’s breaststroke events. Schimmel won the women’s 100 breast in 1:02.55, then went on to clock a 2:16.92 for victory in the 200 breast.

UNLV’s Adnan Beji swept the men’s breast events, starting with a 54.59 to win the men’s 100 breast. Beji then went on to win a tight race in the men’s 200 breast, catching and pulling ahead of Utah’s Jaek Horner on the final 50.
