Vermont Tops Women’s Field At NJIT Invitational, Highlanders Win Men’s Meet

NEWARK, N.J. — The NJIT men’s swimming and diving team completed a resounding home opening meet with a first-place finish in the NJIT Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center Natatorium.

The Highlanders topped the 1,000 point mark for the two-day meet and cleared second place UMass by 161.5 points (1030-868.5). Following NJIT and UMass on the men’s side were LIU (588.5) and Saint Peter’s (238).

On the women’s side, Vermont edged out UMass by less than 100 points (1,133-1,045), with LIU (504) taking third and Saint Peter’s (36) finishing fourth.

NEWARK, N.J. – The Catamounts once again showed their depth as they earned a come from behind first place finish on Saturday in the NJIT Invitational at the NJIT Wellness and Events Center. Lilly Acker earned first place in the 200 breast and the Catamounts earned two third place relay finishes on Saturday, finishing the two-day invitational with 1133 points just ahead of UMass who finished second with 1045, while LIU finished with 504, rounded out by Saint Peters with 36.

“I am pleased with the overall performance from our athletes this weekend,” said head coach Gerry Cournoyer. “Our depth really was our strength. However, this weekend also showed us how much we need to work on.”

HOT IT HAPPENED

  • The Catamounts began the morning session with a three, four, five finish in the 400 IM. Ella Church placed third in a time of 4:44.30, right behind her Ellie Martin finished in 4:44.80 and Natalie Schlemmer rounded out the top five in a time of 4:46.50.
  • Vermont followed that up with another three top five finishes in the 100 fly. Hall Laney placed third in a time of 57.02 while first year teammates Lauren Jessica Drozdowski (58.90) and Lauren Clark (58.99) finished fourth and fifth respectively.
  • UVM earned a third place finish in the 400 medley relay with the combination of Julie Salvador, Schlemmer, Jackie House and Laney finishing in 3:57.96.
  • In the second session of the day the Catamounts continued their strong day with House finishing third in the 100 free in a time of 53.02 while first year teammate Havana Layton finished fifth in a time of 54.29.
  • Lilly Acker claimed the lone individual victory on the day for Vermont finishing first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:26.03.
  • Vermont earned their victory finishing the day off with a third place finish in the 400 free relay with the combination of Layton, House, Anastazja Szukala and Emily Rocco finishing in a time of 3:37.53. Zoe Webster, Josie Hiers, Slavador and Church placed fifth in a time of 3:43.11 to help the Catamounts clinch first place.

WHO’S NEXT
Following this weekend’s NJIT Invitational the Catamounts will return home for their first America East conference meet against New Hampshire on Saturday, October 21. The start time for that meet is scheduled for 12 p.m. and will be broadcast live on AmericaEast.TV.

HOME MEETS
In total, the Catamounts have four more meets at Forbush Natatorium during the 2023-24 campaign. Following their conference matchup with New Hampshire the Catamounts will return to Forbush Natatorium on back-to-back weekends when they face UMass on Saturday, December 2 and UConn on Saturday, December 9. Both of those meets are scheduled to start at 12 p.m. and will be broadcast live on AmericaEast.TV. Vermont’s final home meet of the season will be their annual Senior Day presented by UVM Health Advantage against Siena on Sunday, January 14. That meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
