Indiana Senior State high-point winner Paul Gabhart has verbally committed to swim for the Hoosiers this fall. Just last month, Gabhart took gold in the 200 free, 500 free, 100 fly, 200 fly, and 400 IM at the 2018 Indiana Senior State Short Course Championships, putting his stroke and distance versatility on full display.
Gabhart hails from Shoals, Indiana, where he currently attends Bloomington South High School, after having been homeschooled throughout the rest of his high school years. He placed third in both the 200 IM and 500 free at the recent IHSAA Boys Swimming/Diving Championship and also led off the 8th-place Bloomington South 200 free relay (21.51) and third-place 400 free relay (45.58). Gabhart does his year-round swimming with the club team Lawrence County Aquatics. LCA head coach Adam Young explained Gabhart’s choice: “For Hoosiers head coach Ray Looze it was another example of his in-state recruiting strategy paying off. The fact that Gabhart swam in Bedford, a short 20 minute drive from Bloomington, certainly didn’t hurt. The Hoosiers just completed an amazing run at the NCAA championships placing 3rd and the opportunity to contribute to one of the top programs in the country was a key factor.”
Last summer, Gabhart finished 8th in the 400 IM at Summer Junior Nationals and 21st in the 200 fly, and earned PBs in the 400 free (4:03.57), 200 fly (2:04.21) and 400 IM (4:28.82).
