As we reported in our top 25 wrap-ups article, the no.19 Texas A&M Aggies beat the no. 23 SMU Mustangs after having lost the previous 4 meets:
For the second straight year, this match-up of old Southwest Conference Rivals came down to the final relay, but this time it was the Aggies who came out on top, 119-118. The Aggie relay combination of Balazs Malkany, John Dalton, Casey Strange, and Boris Loncaric hit the wall first in 2:59.70. SMU still had a chance until the A&M ‘B’ Relay finished third in 3:05.17, just .41 seconds ahead of SMU’s ‘B’ relay to seal the meet. A&M diver Henry Stevens also put in a heroic performance, and was the only Aggie diver left standing at the end of the meet. Sophomore Blake Ferguson took a hard fall and was knocked out of the meet, and All-Americans Cam McLean and Grant Nel were representing their home nations in international competition. Stevens finished second to SMU’s Matthew Culbertson in both diving disciplines to win much-needed points for the Aggies.
The lead changed during the meet 5 times in 13 events.
We now have a video of this final relay. It was a great finish to a great meet in a great rivalry series.
