The Grand Valley State University Lakers ushered in the new year by vacationing at the Orlando, Florida YMCA for their winter training trip and returned to Allendale, Michigan with a new video. Complete with underwater and dryland workout montages, 10-meter point-of-view shots, and typical swimmer shenanigans, the GVSU team’s video showcases their training regiment while capturing the feel of what makes college swimming fun.
The Lakers are growing a Division II power as their performance at the 2015 NCAA’s pegged the men at 6th while the women took 20th place overall. Their overall current record in dual meet competition is 12-1, a position the Lakers need to hold in order to defend their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) first and runner-up titles against conference foe Wayne State later this season.
On Saturday, January 9th, they’ll face off against the Wayne State Warriors, another DII program who won the 200 free relay over the Tampa Spartans with a sub 1:19 finish at last year’s NCAA Championships. A side-by-side comparison of each team’s times this season, especially acknowledging Grand Valley’s sprint class, would make the Lakers the favorite in their match-up with the Warriors this weekend.
