Arizona State swimming & diving has a star-studded new coaching staff, and the University put together a short compilation of interviews with their new leaders.
You can check out the video below. In it, new head coach Bob Bowman and new assistants Misty Hyman and Ryan Mallam talk about the future of the Sun Devil Swimming program.

From our previous coverage of ASU’s new coaching hires:
As six-time USA Swimming Coach of the Year, Bowman obviously brings a huge vault of experience to the ASU helm, including the role of U.S. head coach at the 2007, 2009 and 2013 World Championships and has served on every major U.S. National team staff since 2001.
Bowman took a sidestep from his role at NBAC to coach at the University of Michigan from 2005 – 2008, which resulted in Michael Phelps following Bowman and training in Ann Arbor, Michigan in between the Athens and Beijing Olympics. As such, with Rio on the horizon, it is likely Michael Phelps will once again follow his coach and mentor and set-up camp at ASU as well.
Bob Bowman has announced his biggest hire as head coach of the men’s and women’s Arizona State swim teams. During the alumni dinner this evening, Bowman announced Misty Hyman will be joining his staff.
Hyman is an Olympic Gold Medalist and former world record holder. Months after missing the Olympic Team in 1996, she went on to break the World Record in the 100 butterfly. Four years later, she qualified for the US Olympic Team and won a gold medal in the 200 meter fly.
As a college swimmer at Stanford, she twice received the Honda Sports Award for Swimming and Diving, recognizing her as the outstanding college female swimmer of the year in 1997–98 and again in 2000–01.
Mallam has the unique distinction of coaching 50 freestylers to national titles in both Division II and the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association). He was the head coach at D-II Limestone College when Goran Majlat won the national championship, and later was the head coach at Indian River State College when Brad Tandy set the national record.
Mallam was an NCAA swimmer himself from 1996 to 2000, competing for the University of South Carolina.
It seems likely that Mallam will head up ASU’s sprint program, allowing Bowman to focus on distance swimmers, 400 IMers and the like, where he’s had huge success at the club and international levels.
I hadn’t seen Misty Hyman since her senior year at Stanford. Looks like she’s taken good care of herself. I wonder how far she can dolphin under water these days!
Great video. You could feel the excitement and possibilities for the future for ASU swimming. I think they will do wonderfully – especially with Misty Hyman as a part of the team. Who wouldn’t want to be coached by an Olympic champion not to mention medalist at the world championships and NCAA champion????
