Check out the videos below of Michael Andrew’s latest 11-12 National Age Group records from the Santa Claus Invitational in Fishers, Indiana on December 2nd, 2011. He broke the yards records in the 50 free (21.85), 50 fly (24.05), and 50 breast (28.09).
On a very basic level, the first thing you can see in all of the videos is Andrew’s confidence behind the block that seems to be at a level far above the average 12 year old (specifically, his competitors in these races). It’s also great to see him turn and shake hands with his competitors after his races.
In terms of the racing, he clearly gets a big advantage off of the blocks (as one might expect from a 6-plus foot 12-year old). His open turns definitely need some work, but that’s usually something that comes with age. Check out the videos below, and let us know what you think.
I was also fortunate to see this young man swim this past weekend at Lake Central. I did not see him set the record (wish I had), but was very impressed by how nice and considerate he is out of the pool. Shook hands with everyone, signed autographs (couldn’t get my shy daughter to approach him though!!), congratulated those in the lanes next to him. Hope he continues to improve and would love to see him make it to the olymics!! GO Michael!!
This boy is amazing. Just watched him set another national record in 100 breastroke (1:00.19) at Lake Central High School Pool Dyer, IN He has been so nice to all the kids here. A true champion of the times. Look forward to seeing more of him in years to come.
Annoying Mom: You have every right to scream loudly for your son. The guy is absolutely gifted. To go 21.8 in the 50 yard free as a 12 year old is nothing short of a miracle. I hope he keeps improving. I reckon he will.
I am the mother of an Indiana swimmer. My son broke a state record that he was chasing all season after watching a video of Michael break the NAG record in the same race (50 free)…swimming a full 2 seconds faster than the time my son was aiming for. Michael has really motivated him!
A word on Michael’s LCM performance…I am not that knowledgeable about swimming but I do know that Michael has a summer birhday so he peaks during scy season. For many kids, they lose a season during their birthday…Michael was ranked lower this past LCM season because he was a brand new 12 year old competing against kids who were older than him. Make sense?

I believe in you and all that you do and wish to accomplish Michael. You have the genes, the charisma, work ethic, talent, and most of all parents that will support all of your dreams. I wish nothing but the best for you and your swimming career. Congrats on your past and coming success. Can’t wait to see you in the 2016 Olympics and world games before that.
Constructive criticism is appreciated…..as long as it isn’t criticism. Yikes.
Congratulations Michael!! We are so excited to see how well you are doing. What an acomplishment! We had an opportunity to meet Michael and the Andrew family at a swim meet years ago, they are great people. Michael has great sportsmanship. Cheer on Tina!!! Hope to see you guys sometime soon.
Wait a minute, this is a 12 year old kid we are talking about, a VERY big 12 year old kid. I would say all this conjecture about his future is a bit premature. We have all seen very talented and fast kids at this age and it sure doesnt mean they are destined to an olympian in 4-6 years. As far as swim rankings at this age, their are some recogniable names and others that are not and still other names that don’t even appear on a ranking until the kid hits 16-17.
Obviously he is a talented kid and i wish him the best but lets not put the cart before the horse.
Oh, and I dont… Read more »
