In the 400 free final at the Arena Pro Swim Series – Indianapolis, Vien Nguyen swam a 4:07.96 for fourth place, setting a new Vietnamese record in the process.
Nguyen, who holds nearly every female national record in Vietnam, first dropped four seconds off of her own record with her 4:08.66 to win the Southeast Asian Games last summer. She took another seven tenths off of that this past weekend. Take a look at her splits below:
- Nguyen, SEA Games, 2015: 28.68/31.06/31.53/31.65/31.67/31.78/31.79/30.50
- Nguyen, Indianapolis PSS, 2016: 28.73/30.81/31.16/31.40/31.08/31.79/31.70/31.29
There wasn’t a huge strategy change here, when looking at the splits, but Nguyen simply pushed harder for the first 300 meters. She wasn’t able to come home quite as fast as she was in 2015, but that was at a summer championship meet. It certainly looks as though Nguyen has more to drop later this summer in Rio with a full taper.
Nguyen swam a 1:58.82 for third in the 200 free, which was also a new Vietnamese record. In addition, she earned a victory for herself in the 400 IM on the first night of competition. She’s now qualified for the Olympics this summer in four events: the 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 free, and 400 free.
Hope to watch her finals in 400 IM and 400 free in Rio
Best wishes in Rio!
