Villanova Men and Women Fall to In-State Foes Penn State

Women’s Meet

The Penn State Nittany Lions dominated the first event with a 1-2 finish in the 200 medley relay. The A team of Allie PennettiHaley Sinatro, Kaitlin Saloky and Kaitlin Jones touched the pads in a time of 1:41.37, ahead of teammates on the B team who finished in 1:43.00.

Jones went on to be a double individual event winner, winning the 200 free in 1:48.33, just ahead of teammates Alyson Ackman (1:48.61) and Megan Wujciak (1:49.96). The senior also went on to win the 100 free, touching in a time of 51.58. Her fellow senior teammate Melissa Rodriguez was also a double winner for the lions, winning both the 100 breast and 200 breast in times of 1:02.11 and 2:15.30 respectively.

Katelyn SowinskiNiki Price and Mackenzie Cornell were also double winners for the Lions. Sowinski had a tough double, winning the 200 fly in 2:00.56 and the 500 free in 4:53.65. Price had an impressive swim in the 100 fly, winning in NCAA ‘B cut’ and fastest time posted by any Lion for the 2015-16 season (53.80). She also went on to take the victory in the 50 free, in 23.51. Cornell won on both the 1m and 3m boards, with scores of 268.27 and 288.90 respectively.

Villanova’s Darby Goodwin earned first place points for the Wildcats, dominating the 200 back, winning in a time of 2:03.71, almost 2 seconds ahead of the field.

In the 200 IM, it was Wujciak who took the victory in 2:03.79 and in the 100 back, it was teammate Pennetti who clocked in first in 55.35. The Lions took another individual win in the 1000 free, when Casey Francis touched the pads in a time of 9:59.71.

In the 400 free relay, it was the Penn State B team that touched the pads first, with the team of Monika Gonzalez Hermosillo, Pennetti, Price and Saloky clocking in in 3:26.03, more than 3 seconds ahead of teammates on the A team.

Men’s Meet

Like the women, the men started the meet off with a 1-2 finish in the first relay to set the tone for the overall win. The A team of Tomer ZamirAndrew SchuehlerMatt Grillo and Zach Kantz clocked in in 1:31.42, just ahead of their teammates on the B team (1:31.76).

Zamir went on to dominate the 100 back, touching the pads in 50.2, almost 2 seconds ahead of the field. The freshman also posted an impressive time in the 50 free, finishing 2nd in 21.13, just behind his teammate Grillo, who won the event in 20.76. In the 100 free, it was Kantz who took the victory, finishing in 46.59.

After a strong breaststroke leg in the medley relay, Schuehler garnered the first place points in the 100 breast, winning in a time of  56.46, just out touching teammate Gunther Cassell who finished in 56.54. Cassell went on to lead the Lions in a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 breast, winning in 2:05.37, Michael Kwasnik finsihing 2nd (2:06.16) and Nathaniel Bledsoe finishing 3rd (2:08.66).

The Lions took double victories on the diving boards, it was Logan Knauss who won on the 1m, scoring 338.39 points and on the 3m, it was Hector Garcia who won, scoring 388.65 points.

In the final relay, it was Penn State who clocked in first, with the A team of Robert BantleyRyan O’Neill, Kantz and Tim Maurer finishing in 3:05.47.

  • 200 free – Penn State’s Matthew Stasiunas (1:39.87)
  • 200 fly – Penn State’s JP Corvine (1:51.79)
  • 200 back – Penn State’s David Gross (1:52.53)
  • 500 free – Matthew Guenter (4:34.64)
  • 100 fly – Maurer (49.98)
  • 200 IM – Bledsoe (1:55.15)
