Villanova’s Darby Goodwin Named Big East Swimmer of the Week

New York – Freshmen ruled the pool last week as first years Darby Goodwin of Villanova and Lior Grubert of Seton Hall have been named BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Athletes of the Week

Grubert recorded four individual first place finishes for the Pirates and was a member of four Pirates’ relays that were first to touch the wall as SHU topped conference foes Georgetown and Villanova at the Rutgers Tri-meet. The freshman posted a time of 1:42.34 in the 200-free, 4:39.39.75 in the 500-free, 9:35.35 in the 1,000-free, and 4:03.84 in the 400-IM, all BIG EAST Championship qualifying times. Seton Hall defeated the Hoyas 224-129 and Wildcats 183-92 to improve to 6-2 overall and 3-1 against league opponents.

Goodwin played a key role in helping the Villanova women to victory at the Rutgers Quad-Meet, bringing home two individual first place finishes and two second place finishes. Her highlight win of the weekend came in the 200-back as the Florida native edged Rutgers’ All-American Joanna Wu 2:01.27 to 2:01.79. Goodwin took the 200-IM with a time of 2:04.75 and came in second in the 100-back at 56:31 and the 100-fly at 56.74. The freshman also participated in the Wildcats’ 200-medley relay that came in second with a time of 1:44.43 and the second place 400-Medley relay.

Friars Edge Butler for First BIG EAST Win
The Friars women’s squad claimed victory over Butler behind three first place finishes from Katie Fallon in the 1,000-free, 500-free and 200-free, two from  Abby Czerniecki  in the 100 and 200-breaststroke and one from  Mackenzie Cloughlin in the 200-butterfly.

This Week
The Providence women will enter the pool again on Nov. 10 at Rhode Island and on the 13th against Coast Guard while Villanova travels to Penn this weekend.
