Vinny Marciano Breaks NAG Record in 100 Back for 2nd Time on Sunday

Swimming into finals, Vinny Marciano of the Morris County Swim Club in New Jersey broke his own National Age Group Record in the 100 yard backstroke on Sunday evening in finals of the 2014 New Jersey Age Group Championships.

The 12-year old was a 53.26 in the finals of that race to win the 14 & under division.  He held back on racing finals for the entirety of the meet on Sunday, where he began the evening session with a 22.87 in the 50 free and then his record-breaking swim in the 100 yard back.

As compared to prelims, Marciano went out even faster, splitting 25.77 at the 50.

Morning splits: 26.02 – 27.41 = 53.43
Evening splits: 25.77 – 27.49 = 53.26

Coming into the day, Destin Lasco had the record in 53.54. This marks the 4th time in 6 weeks that Ryan Murphy’s old record of 54.20 has been broken: twice by Lasco, and twice by Marciano, both of whom live in the state of New Jersey.

Vinny Marciano has swum 1.01.60 in the 100 back in long course at the CeraVe Invitational. With 2 phenoms like him and Destin Lasco, perhaps we will see this year the first sub minute swim from an 11/12-year-old boy. It would be huge!

When are zones? If they both age up to 13/14 before then they will have some competition. I had a swimmer who qualified for JO’s in every 11/12 event and turned 13 on March 4th…..birthdays can be disappointing in swimming.

I have been truly honored to be able to coach such a well rounded athlete and humble human being. I have learned to challenge myself as a coach to make him a better swimmer, and not just him, all of my swimmers. Most people think that swimming comes fully natural to Vinny, it doesn’t. What they don’t see are the countless practices where we just work on technique, not just his speed. He is always working hard to be technically fast, not just fast. Coaching him is something I will never take for granted because I know, it doesn’t happen often. To see the smirk and shrug of the shoulders after an amazing race, and Vinny say “eh, I still… Read more »

Hah!! Its amazing how you try to take credit for Vinny’s success when you hardly ever coach him. Al is his real coach. On the rare days when he is at your pool, you ignore all other swimmers. He’s making you a better coach? How about if you actually “coach” other swimmers? And yes, the Marcianos are great people and Vinny is a sweet humble boy.

No, Marciano didn’t swim 200 BK at this meet. Vin is a big 12 yo (about 5’10” so far)

Thanks for the news.

Since both are from NJ, it would have been fun to see them go at it at this meet. If I remember correctly something like this happened with regard to the 10 & Under record where they traded it back and forth.

They are in different LSC’s in NJ. This meet was 14U Champs for the NJ LSC. Destin is in Middle Atlantic. They should meet at Eastern Zones in March, if Destin hasn’t aged up. Vinny is tall. I don’t think he swam 200 Back at this meet.

Has he swum the 200 back at this meet?

Great performance for Mr Marciano.
I’m sure that Mr Lasco is aware and will respond very quickly.
A 52 is within his reach in the next few weeks.
Both kids are backstroke phenoms.
We have our new Murphy/Conger rivalry! 🙂
It would be good if they could swim against each other this year.

These 21st Century NAGs are crazy. Is this kid tall? A 53.26 100 back is hard to fathom for a 12 year old……

I don’t know for Vinny Marciano but Destin Lasco isn’t a tall boy, at least for the moment.
