Virginia Competes at Ohio State Invite This Weekend

The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams travel to Columbus, Ohio, this weekend (Nov. 22-24) to take part in the Ohio State Invite at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

The final meet of the calendar year for the Cavaliers will be contested with preliminary and finals sessions each day. The No. 12 UVa women will face off against No. 5 Florida, No. 16 Purdue, No. 19 Ohio State and Kentucky, while the No. 18 Virginia men will compete against No. 2 Florida, No. 10 Ohio State and Kentucky.

The Cavaliers have several student-athletes ranking in the top-25 nationally in individual events, including sophomore Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.), who ranks fourth in both the women’s 100 back (53.25 – converted from meters) and the 200 back (1:55.30).

Freshman Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) is No. 4 in the 1,000 free (9:42.00) and No. 5 in the 500 free (4:43.11), while classmates Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany) and Kaitlyn Jones (Newark, Del.) also rank in the top 25 in two events. Jones is 14th in the 200 IM (2:00.77) and 23rd in the 200 back (1:58.88), while Simon is 16th in the 200 breast (2:14.59) and 20th in the 100 breast.

Junior Ellen Williamson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) ranks in the top 25 in three events, including the 200 IM (11th – 2:00.63), 200 back (17th – 1:58.22) and 100 back (21st – 54.78), and classmate Shaun Casey ranks 16th in the 400 IM (4:17.79) and 25th in the 200 IM (2:02.23).

On the men’s side, seniors Jan Daniec (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Brad Phillips (Herndon, Va.) ranks 11th (4:25.51) and 12th (4:25.69) in the country in the 500 free, respectively. Daniec also is No. 17 in the 1,000 free in 9:12.48.

Sophomore Luke Papendick (Kinnelon, N.J.) ranks 18th in the 200 back (1:46.15) with senior Parker Camp (Brentwood, Tenn.) not far behind in 20th (1:46.23).

In the breaststroke events, sophomore Yannick Kaeser (Mumpf, Switzerland) ranks 21st in both the 100 (55.52) and 200 (2:01.04). Senior Taylor Grey (Williston, Vt.) ranks just ahead of Kaeser in the 200 breast in 20th (2:01.00).

On the diving boards, junior JB Kolod (Pittsburgh, Pa.) ranks third on both the men’s 1-meter (372.45) and 3-meter (425.78 – UVa school record) boards. On the women’s side, sophomore Katie Warburg (Wilton, Conn.) was named the ACC Female Diver of the Week on Nov. 12 for her efforts against Texas, Penn State and West Virginia.
