Virginia High School State Champion Jerry (J.C.) Gordon Commits to Virginia Tech

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Liberty Christian Academy junior Jerry (J.C.) Gordon has verbally committed to join the Virginia Tech Men’s Swimming program beginning in the fall of 2024:

“I am super excited to become a Hokie and be part of a program that is definitely on the rise. When I visited campus, I felt right at home. I’d like to thank my coaches, teammates, and family for supporting me along the way. I can’t wait to work with the VT coaching staff – they have been awesome in this process. Go Hokies!”

Gordon swims year-round for the Lynchburg YMCA swim team based in VA. He is a rangy freestyler, primarily specializing in the distance freestyle events. He improved nearly 35 seconds in the 1650 free in the last year alone.

Best times (SCY):

  • 50 free- 21.62
  • 100 free- 47.04
  • 200 free- 1:40.49
  • 500 free- 4:30.53
  • 1650 free- 15:38.65

At the 2022 VHSL Class 3 Swimming & Diving Championships, Gordon placed 2nd in the 200 free (1:40.50) and 2nd in the 500 (4:31.04). In the 2021 version of the meet, he won the 100 free in a best time of 47.04.

Outside of the high school season, Gordon has shown that longer races cater better to his strengths, as he ranked 32nd in the nation last year among 15-16 year-olds in the 1650 freestyle, posting his 15:38.65 at the 2021 NC YOTA Arena Capital Classic.

The Virginia Tech men placed 11th at the 2022 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, scoring 143 points. Many of their points came from sprint-specialist Youssef Ramadan, who placed 7th in the 50 free (19.04), and 11th in the 100 free (41.72).

This year, the top time put up so far in the 500 freestyle from a Virginia Tech swimmer has been a 4:29.46 by Luis Dominguez. Although this is still very early on in the NCAA season, Gordon’s 500 time as a high school sophomore fits in well with this program. Last year, the Hokies had no swimmers compete in the 1650 at the NCAA Championships, and their best finisher at ACC’s was Filippo Dal Maso, who recorded a 15:19.30 for 21st place.

Gordon will be joining Lynchburg YMCA teammate Brendan Whitfield (high school class of 2023) at Virginia Tech. Whitfield is a sprint specialist, posting a 43.80 100 free and 1:36.78 200, and is the 12th rank in SwimSwam’s Top 20 NCAA Swimming Recruits in the Boys High School Class of 2023

J.C. is the younger brother of current University of Kentucky swimmer John Michael Gordon.
