Virginia HS Champ Eli Martin to Stay in State at Virginia Tech (2024)

Arlington, Virginia Native Eli Martin will remain in state to swim for Virginia Tech starting this fall. Martin, who currently swims for the Arlington Aquatic Club, excels in the 100/200 breast and 200/400 IM.

At the Virginia Class 6 State Championships, Martin helped Washington Liberty High School to a top 15 finish, scoring 37 of their 64 points. He won the 100 breast in a best time of 54.65 and took 2nd in the 200 IM with a 1:48.55 — also a PB. He additionally contributed a split of 46.92 while anchoring the 400 free relay. Martin has had an incredible past 2 seasons, as at the 2022 edition of the Virginia State Championships, he finished 7th in the 100 breast with a PB of 1:00.34 and 8th in the 200 IM with a best of 1:57.86. The following year at the VA State Championships, he got his 100 breast down to 56.32, finishing 3rd. His 200 IM additionally improved, dropping down to a 1:51.49 for 4th. In just 2 years, Martin has dropped 5+ seconds in his 100 breast, 7+ seconds in his 200 breast, and 7+ seconds in his 200 IM. 

Most recently, at the NCSA Summer Championships (LCM), Martin set PBs in every event he swam, taking 2nd in the 100 breast (1:02.22) and 4th in the 50 breast (28.71). He additionally swam a 53.86 in the 100 free, 1:57.87 in the 200 free, and 58.91 in the 100 fly. 

Martin also competed at the US Olympic Team Trials this past June, swimming the 200 breast in 2:14.94 to finish 37th. He was just off his PB (2:14.54), which he set at the NCAP Elite Time Trials.

  • 400 IM – 3:54.50
  • 200 free – 1:40.26

The Hokies are coming off a 3rd place finish at the 2024 ACC Championships, which is their 4th consecutive top 3 finish. The men’s team was led by Carles Coll Marti, who won the 200 breast and took 2nd in the 100 breast and 200 IM. Marti is a senior, however, and will not overlap with Martin. Martin’s 200 breast would have qualified for a second swim at the 2024 ACCs, as a 1:57.99 was the cut off for the C-final. He is additionally just off what it took to return for a night swim in his other primary events, as it took a 54.51 in the 100 breast and 1:47.03/3:51 in the 200/400 IM. 

VT’s incoming freshman class includes Floridian Hayden Sunman, Hungarian Levente Balogh, Illinoisan Kyle Algrim, Texan Danny Bishop, along with 4 Virginian natives in Martin, Pablo Silva, H.T. Tragle, and JC Gordon. Silva will look to serve as an excellent training partner for Martin, with bests of 55.13/1:58.17 in the 100/200 breast and a 1:48.72 200 IM PB.
