The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are set to open the 2016-17 season against Pitt in a dual meet on Friday (Oct. 21) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Charlottesville.

Diving action is set to begin at 1 p.m., while swimming is slated to start at 4 p.m. Admission to all Virginia home meets at the AFC is free. Live results will be available at VirginiaSports.com. Public parking is available at Slaughter Recreation Center and the parking lot closest to the West Gate at Scott Stadium on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Cavalier women posted their second-consecutive fifth-place finish at the 2016 NCAA Championships. The fifth-place NCAA finishes are the highest in program history. Virginia also won its ninth-straight ACC Championship. Senior Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) captured the NCAA title in the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle and earned two Olympic medals in Rio over the summer, including gold in the 4×200-meter free relay. Senior Kaitlyn Jones (Newark, Del.) holds four UVA individual records, while fellow senior Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany) was the NCAA runner-up in the 200 breaststroke in 2015.

The Virginia men finished sixth at the 2016 ACC Championships and tied for 28th at the NCAA meet. Sophomore Sam Magnan (Bethlehem, Pa.) earned All-ACC honors in the 1,650 free, while fellow sophomore Zach Fong (Moorestown, N.J.) qualified for the NCAA Championships in his first year with the Cavaliers.

Pitt’s men and women both finished 10th at the ACC Championships in 2016. Virginia and Pitt last met in dual-meet action on Feb. 8, 2014. The Cavaliers swept, winning 189-103 on the women’s side and 179-112 on the men’s.

Next up, the Cavaliers will host Michigan and Penn State in a two-day double-dual meet Nov. 4-5.
