Virginia State Champion Butterflier Athena Vanyo Commits to Virginia Tech

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Butterflier Athena Vanyo has verbally committed to Virginia Tech as part of their high school class of 2021. Vanyo is a junior at Monticello High School in Charlottesville, Virginia: a city that is home to the Hokies’ in-state rivals University of Virginia.

I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to swim at Virginia Tech. Thank you to my mom and dad for driving me to practice every morning, my teammates for pushing me to excel, and my friends for always being there to cheer me on. #gohokies

Last season, as a sophomore, Vanyo won the Virginia 3A State Championship in the 100 fly in 55.06. Class 3A includes the second-smallest group of high schools in the state, and Vanyo’s time was the 5th-best among the 5 Virginia public high school state championship meets.

Best Times in Yards:

  • 50 free – 23.72
  • 100 free – 51.77
  • 100 back – 57.33
  • 100 breast – 1:07.07
  • 100 fly – 54.33
  • 200 IM – 2:05.61

She will pair with backstroker Alex Eastmond, who also committed recently to be a part of Virginia Tech’s class of 2021, the first two commits for the women’s team in the class.

Sprint butterfly is a strength of the current Virginia Tech team, led by junior Joelle Vereb, who currently ranks 23rd in the country with a 52.32 in the 100 fly. Based on publicly-committed swimmers so far, Vanyo is the heir-apparent to that sprint butterfly spot.

Vanyo, who trains with the CYAC USA Swimming club, is a Winter Junior Championships qualifier and a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American. Vanyo says that she hopes to pursue a career in a medical field (specifically radiology or dermatology) and plans to major in biology. She also considered Florida State, James Madison, Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia.
