The Virginia Tech Hokies have picked up a verbal commitment from a stud sprint backstroker from the Parkland Aquatic Club, Peter Conzola.
As a junior, Conzola jumped from 7th at the Pennsylvania AAA State Championship meet as a sophomore to the state champion in 2013 as a junior, where he swam a 48.80 in yards. He also goes 1:48.81 in the 200 yard backstroke, and is a plus 100 butterflier, with a best time of 50.47.
The Hokies have gotten some good contributions early this season from the likes of Collin Higgins, who will compete with Conzola for medley relay spots in the 2014-2015 season, but that can’t mask the fact that the backstrokes overall are a weakness for this team since graduating Zach McGinnis. Conzola, as far as we can tell, already has a faster 100 yard backstroke time than any Virginia Tech recruit in history, and he’s still got another year to improve that status.
Conzola swims for Freedom High School and the Parkland Aquatic Club under Ryan Woodruff. Woodruff is also the former head coach of the Gator Swim Club and the North Carolina Aquatic Club.
