CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s and reigning national champion women’s swimming & diving teams released their 2021-22 schedules, head coach Todd DeSorbo announced on Friday (September 17).

“I’m looking forward to another great season with our squads,” DeSorbo said. “Coming off a banner year for our program, the challenge will be to exceed the teams’ performances from last season, and we like challenges. Thus, we’ve put together one of the most challenging dual-meet schedules in the country.  We’ll face six of last year’s top-10 teams on the women’s side and four of the top-10 men’s teams. I feel this type of challenging schedule will prepare us well for the runs we’d like to make at the NCAA Championship this year. I’m looking forward to getting the season started.”

UVA will host five dual meets as well as the second annual Cavalier Invite. The Cavaliers will travel to the Tennessee Invite and the US Open, while competing on the road in two dual meets. Virginia’s schedule includes NCAA top teams Texas and California, whose programs had top-four finishes on both the men’s and women’s sides in 2021, as well as NC State whose women were the runner-up last year.

Virginia opens the season at home, hosting Georgetown on Oct. 9. The Cavaliers will also host Army (Oct. 30), Texas in a two-day meet (Nov. 5-6), North Carolina (Jan. 21) and NC State (Jan. 22). The Cavalier Invite will run Feb. 4-6.

UVA will travel to California for a two-day meet (Oct. 15-16) before three meets on the road at the Tennessee Invite (Nov. 18-20), the US Open (Dec. 2-4) and closing out the road slate at Virginia Tech (Jan. 15).

The ACC Championship will be a combined meet this season, held in Atlanta, Feb. 15-19. The women will look to defend their title at the NCAA Championships, March 16-19 in Atlanta, and the NCAA Men’s Championship will be held March 23-26 in Atlanta.

Also competing in the 2022 season will be the World Championships and World University Games. Trials for both meets will be April 26-20 in Greensboro, N.C., with the World Championships held May 13-29 in Fukuoka, Japan and the World University Games June 27-July 3 in Chengdu, China. The US Nationals will be held August 2-6 in Irvine, Calif.

Virginia’s women are coming off the program’s first national title last season and the men tied for the second-best finish in program history after placing ninth a year ago.

UVA’s women return NCAA individual champions and Olympic medalists Alex Walsh and Kate Douglass, as well as fellow All-Americans Lexi Cuomo, Maddie Donohoe, Abby Harter, Jessica Nava, Ella Nelson, Reilly Tiltmann and Alexis Wenger. The Cavaliers also add Olympic silver medalist Emma Weyant on the women’s side.

The men return ACC Champion and All-American Matt Brownstead along with All-Americans Will Cole, Max Edwards, Justin Grender, August Lamb, Noah Nichols, Casey Storch and Jack Wright.

An auspicious absence from this schedule is Tennessee?

Umm, I believe Tennessee is intending to participate in their own invite of the same name in which UVA indicates on their schedule they will also be participating.

It is absolutely silly to mention an in-conference meet than a meet at Cal

Yeah, nothing to see there…just the top swim rivalry on the east coast and last year’s women champs and runner-ups and coaching mentor vs mentee and his former school where he initially made his name. Why mention it at all, especially when west coast swimming must be all the matters.

They should’ve added Stanford to the Cal meet. That would’ve been an epic Tri meet!

Stanford has a conference meet at Utah that weekend at Salt Lake City was already scheduled. Would have been great…

I didn’t realize World Champ Trials is just a 5 day meet – are they just doing prelims/finals?

I don’t believe semis are a thing at USA swimming meets outside of trials
