Virtual Winter Juniors Dec 10 Update: Late Week 1 Meets Added

2020 18 & UNDER WINTER CHAMPIONSHIPS

FORMAT

In a pandemic-adjusted season, USA Swimming’s Winter Junior Championships are taking place as a multi-site competition. Results from any sanctioned meet between December 1 and December 13 will count for Winter Championships scoring, with an unlimited number of meet results in that time frame being combined to create the final results.

We looked at results on Monday, roughly the halfway point of the qualifying period. But a number of meets from last week were submitted late, so we’re taking a second look at the results as of December 10.

RESULTS AS OF DECEMBER 10

USA Swimming is compiling results on its website – you can play around with the tool here.

We pulled the top 20 swimmers in each event so far. These numbers are, of course, limited by which meets have and have not been entered into the database as of Thursday morning.

Anyone else completely annoyed by the fact that the west coast isn’t swimming? Kinda unfair and uncool. Just sayin. Glad some kids can swim but cmon this is a total farce. Many great swimmers sidelined by politics. Wisconsin has a jillion more cases than a Oregon for instance, and Oregon is shut down and kids in Wisconsin swim every weekend. This kids in Washington and California also screwed. Can someone address this inequity instead of pretending that all is great in the swim world! I’d rather see these results with a disclaimer. I think USA swimming should be the first to address it up front. If they did, I missed it. Meets were cancelled up and down the west coast… Read more »

I’m not sure what you want us to say. Elections have consequences.

I want someone to recognize that while some kids are achieving great things other kids don’t have that opportunity. It seems to be glossed over that’s all I am saying. Kids didn’t vote or decide to live somewhere where their whole passion has been stripped from them. It blows. I guess you maybe live in Wisconsin and have enjoyed your liberty, lucky you.

Sorry, that came off the wrong way. I’m on your side. I think it’s a unnecessary mistake to shut down swimming anywhere, and I feel awful for those kids that are locked out of the pool. Especially in CA where the vast majority of swimming happens outside.

Thanks for clarifying I appreciate it.

Do you want USA Swimming to lecture a governor who is much more interested in his dinner parties than the athletes in his state? It would fall on deaf ears because he knows better. Sadly, I fear that elections do have consequences and we will all be at the mercy of politicians who know better than everyone else.

Or at the mercy of those ‘stupid’ public health professionals with those lame MDs and PhDs who are trying to save lives and not overwhelm our nationally stretched hospitals and waaay overworked health care workers. Who decided that they actually know better and their facts are any better than my opinion?I Once the election comes the virus will magically disappear because it isn’t real and just a political dirty trick….oh wait.

I just want someone in a position to do so (swim swam, swimming world, or for goodness sake the actual USAS website) to preface these articles or databases with great swims with a disclaimer that many other unfortunate kids are getting no opportunity based on current state restrictions. That’s all. Is that so much to ask? Just acknowledge those who aren’t getting the opportunity. That’s something better than the nothing they are currently getting. Honestly, I’d like to see an analysis of the “winter championships” and tell me how many kids are from the west coast. I bet there’s someone out there who’d like to do that!

Well all understand your frustration. But take a deep breath, and relax. I get it – you want to raise a ruckus to feel heard. We hear you. We definitely hear you. Attacking everyone who has nothing to do with the coronavirus or the restrictions doesn’t actually help anybody.

As Michael gave the advice the other day: focus on what you can control.

I agree wholeheartedly. And mostly, trying to do that. Definitely not trying to attack anyone, just want the facts of the matter clarified for any and all to remember what we are dealing with here— and only a few large parties are in the position to do that clarification. Bigger fish to fry in the world, understood.

Also why are college freshman being counted when at usual juniors they don’t go

Juniors is not, and never was, delimited by grade level. It’s delimited by age. Most years there are college swimmers at juniors.

Don’t forget the Peach State classic in GA. Had a relay NAG in the first session tonight. And most of the top swimmers in Georgia will be attending.

TYR Blizzard Blitz Meet at the Triangle Aquatic Center is the likely source of many rankings changes since TAC has at least 6 top 20 recruits / national team / junior national team members alone.

It makes me giggle that Tori Huske is the 6th place team.

About Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson swam for nearly twenty years. Then, Jared Anderson stopped swimming and started writing about swimming. He's not sick of swimming yet. Swimming might be sick of him, though. Jared was a YMCA and high school swimmer in northern Minnesota, and spent his college years swimming breaststroke and occasionally pretending …
