Wagner Women Top Iona, Sacred Heart; Gaels Down Seahawks In Men’s Meet

New Rochelle, NY – The Wagner men’s and women’s swimming & diving programs competed in a tri-meet with Iona and Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon.

The women started their season with a 2-0 mark, defeating the hosts Iona, 128-77, and Sacred Heart, 134-103. The men dropped their lone matchup against Iona, 114-109. They did not compete against the Pioneers because they do not have a swim program.

Both programs started their seasons off with victories in the 400-yard medley relay.

The team of juniors Shamiya Guirre and Madison Petricevic, freshman Rebekka Luoto, and senior Abbie Hassell earned first place with a time of 3:58.50. For the men, it was the team of sophomores Kaan Nalçaci, Joel Knappi and Alex Magditch, and freshman Jasu Ovaskainen that earned a time of 3:28.61 to place atop the podium.

Overall, the women earned seven individual victories, while the men tallied five.

Sophomore Aura Vilarrasa placed first in two events. The Montagut, Spain native earned the top spot in both the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke with times of 1:56.29 and 2:09.04, respectively.

Fifth year Olivia Bishop also found the top of the podium in two events. With a time of 24.83, Bishop placed first in the 50-yard freestyle before earning a time of 53.17 in the 100-yard freestyle to earn the top spot.

Luoto impressed in her first collegiate action, earning first place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard breaststroke.

Rounding out the first place finishes for the women was Guirre, who earned first place in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:14.42.

For the men, Magditch earned the first first place finish of the tri-meet for the men in the 50-yard freestyle. He timed a 21.64 for the top spot of the podium.

Freshman Nikkolai Carrillo had two first place finishes in his Wagner debut. He placed first in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:55.58 and in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:54.52.

Lahti, Finland native Ovaskainen earned his first individual victory with the Seahawks in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.98.

Returning sophomores Ruben Van Gool and Ranger Gavino also placed first in their respective competitions. Van Gool’s first place finish in the 500-yard freestyle clocked in at 4:46.06, while Gavino took home first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:10.99.

The two teams ended their day with first and second place finishes in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Vilarrasa, freshman Daniela Moreno Vazquez, Petricevic and Bishop placed first with a time of 3:37.40, while Ovaskainen, Knappi, sophomore Andrew Strickland and Magditch placed second with a time of 3:10.47.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, October 28 when they take on Fairfield.

Before a capacity Homecoming Day crowd at the Hynes Athletics Center Pool, the Iona Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams each came from behind in the last race to grab wins today in a Tri-Meet with Wagner College and Sacred Heart University.
 
The Iona women’s quartet of Megan JosephsEla GoucherElisa Vaher and Ashley Benkert jumped out to an early lead to win by 1.94 seconds in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay over Sacred Heart at 3:37.54 by a final score of 123-114.
 
The Iona men’s team of Michael FaughnanKieran EganLiam Pyatt and Nate Wales posted the team’s best regular season time in school history at 3:06.87 in the 400-Free Relay to grab the win from Wagner, who was 3.6 seconds behind, with a final score of 114-109.
 
“To have two meets go down to the final two races of the day, is very exciting for the team and crowd,” commented Coach Nick Cavataro, in his 43rd season. “I don’t know if we ever had that here. You really find out a lot about your team’s determination and desire in pressure race situations like this and they all responded to a high level.”
 
Individually the Iona women, despite falling to a powerful Wagner women’s team (128-77) picked up their first win of the season with individual wins from Junior Ashley Benkert in the 200-yard Butterfly at 2:12.26. Graduate student Tristan Urso took the 1000-yard Freestyle at 10:49.70.
 
On the men’s side Senior Michael Faughnan took two wins in  back-to-back races, taking the 1000-yard Freestyle at 9:47.47 and the 200-yard Freestyle at 1:39.77. Sophomore diver, Dylan Riccio took both the 1 and 3-Meter Springboard events with respective totals of 178.20 and 222.90. Freshman Kieran Egan claimed a win in the 200-Backstroke at 1:53.24.
 
Iona takes to the road next Friday for the first time this season as they face Long Island University in Brooklyn.

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart University women’s swimming & diving team competed at Iona on Saturday for a tri-meet against both Iona and Wagner. The Pioneers fell 123-114 to Iona and 134-103 to Wagner. Olivia McNicholas won the one-meter board scoring 237.90 and the three-meter board scoring 253.

The Pios took to the pool for the one and three meter boards, nine individual events, and a pair of relays.

First-year Sophia Velleco placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.91. Velleco also finished second in the 500-yard freestyle swimming a 5:18.22.

First-year Maeve English finished second in the 1000-yard freestyle improving her time from last week by almost three seconds with a time of 10:57.64. English touched the wall right after Velleco in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:19.58.

Junior Melanie delivered the fastest time for the Pioneers in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:12.48 to take second.
