On the first day of competition in Huangshan at the 2015 Chinese Fall National Championship meet, Wang Lizhuo lowered Anton Chupkov’s junior world record in the 100 breaststroke 0f 1:00.12 with a time of 59.79. He also broke the Chinese national record.
Wang has made huge improvements in the 100 breaststroke over the last year, dropping almost two seconds from last year. A year ago at the 2014 Chinese National Championships, Wang won the men’s 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.06.
The event was much faster this year with the top three swimmers all finishing under last year’s winning time.
Additionally, Wang is now the first Chinese swimmer in history to break the 1 minute barrier in the 100 breaststroke. The previous national record was set in April of 2015 by Li Xiang at 1:00.13.
A bigger barrier on the world stage, however, is that Wang is the first junior swimmer to lower the junior world record under one minute as well. Michael Andrew and Anton Chupkov both were close this year, but neither were able to break 1:00.
