Last week, the China Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA) announced that six Chinese swimmers had recently tested positive for banned substances. One of those swimmers was Chinese National Record holder and World Junior Record holder Wang Lizhuo, who tested positive for clenbuterol in the fall of 2015. He received only a warning, and his team had to pay a fine. FINA is still considering whether or not to appeal the Chinese agency’s decision.
Amid controversy over CHINADA’s handling of the situation, the Chinese Olympic Swimming Trials rage on. Earlier today Wang, who was born in 1999, broke his own Chinese National Record and World Junior Record in the 100 breaststroke, swimming 59.64 to defend his title from the Chinese Fall National Championships in September. That swim from last season made him both the first Chinese swimmer and the first junior swimmer ever under a minute.
His swim from today also moves him from fifth to fourth in the world rankings, with only Cameron van der Burgh, Adam Peaty, and Felipe Silva sitting ahead of him. Wang is well-within striking distance of Silva’s best time this season, a 59.56. Peaty is second with 59.28 and van der Burgh is the only swimmer under 59 this season with his 58.97 from the FINA World Cup meet in Paris-Chartreus.

Pathetic that this is allowed to happen, and not just in the sport of swimming…

If the record is legitimized and he is allowed to compete in Rio its ridiculous. Drug cheats should receive lifetime bans.
How is it acceptable to only warn on a positive doping test? This is beyond absurd. This kid shouldn’t be allowed to swim competitively ever again, much less in the Olympics and own the WJR record.
Crazy. Doping is not a victimless crime.
China may be able to put together a good medley relay this year, think about it
Jiayu 52.37
Lizhuo 58.92
Zhuhao 50.54
Zetao 46.79
Total: 3:28.62
It’s possible
At least one member of this medley should be suspended for illegal substance?
Meanwhile Alberto Contador is talking with his agent and saying ‘and they say that cycling is the sport that most lacks accountability in doping control?’
FINA is appealing? I thought they were in charge.
ct swim fan – this is a common misunderstanding, and we try to clear it up as frequently as possible: when it comes to anti-doping, the World Anti-Doping Code is the ultimate authority. Not the World Anti-Doping Association (WADA), just the World Anti-Doping Code. FINA or WADA cannot simply overrule CHINADA’s decision. They can, however, appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Braden, any idea who the Court of Arbitration for Sport consists of?
Thanks for clearing that up Braden. What I guess I don’t understand then is how do some people with positive tests just get warnings while others get banned? Anyone insight?
Going by past experience, they must be trying to figure out how to name him swimmer of the meet.
