Washington High School Runner-Up Elli Straume Verbally Commits to Arizona State

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Elli Straume of Mukilteo, Washington has verbally committed to Arizona State University in the class of 2020. She is the Sun Devils’ first public commitment for their women’s team.

Straume has finished in the top 3 at the Washington High School State Championship meet in 4 individual races, including at least once in every year of her high school career so far. That includes a runner-up finish in the 200 yard free in the fall of 2018 (1:49.24) and a 3rd-place finish in the 500 yard free (5:00.40).

Best Times in Yards:

  • 50 free – 23.84
  • 100 free – 50.84
  • 200 free – 1:49.12
  • 500 free – 4:56.68
  • 100 back – 55.58
  • 200 back – 1:59.53
  • 200 IM – 2:06.95

While her focus in high school meets has been mostly on the freestyle races (moving from sprints toward middle distance as her career has progressed), she’s also a very good backstroker. She dropped almost 2 seconds in the 100 back as a junior and 2.4 seconds in the 200 back. That’s where she has the potential to fill the biggest depth need for the team, especially if she drops more time as a high school senior. The school didn’t have any female swimmers ranked higher than 18th in the Pac-12 last season in either backstroke race, though they’re adding 2 good backstrokers in the class of 2019: Katrina Marty (53.8/1:57.9) and Riley Lexvold (54.12/1:56.2).

Straume swims for West Coast Aquatics and Kamiak High School.

Hey, this is a kid (literally) who must have worked unbelievably hard and to get to this point in her journey. A point 99% of club swimmers never make it to. Congratulate her, let her enjoy it.
I know nothing about her, don’t have an opinion either way on the program and generally enjoy some good snarky comments but this is not the place.
