The opening meet of the season for the Centre swimming and diving teams took place at the Derby City Invite. The Colonels had a strong debut meet for 2016-17, finishing fifth on the men’s side while the women finished second.

On the men’s side, the Colonels scored 329 points at the Derby City Classic, 25 points behind McKendree University. Centre started off the scoring in relays, as the team of juniors Bradley Baker (Paducah, Ky.), Noah Martin (Spartanburg, S.C.), Logan Oatman (Paducah, Ky.) and sophomore Evan Doyle (Louisville, Ky.) took fourth place in the 200-yard medley relay.

Oatman and Martin also had strong performances as individuals in their signature races. Oatman took second place in the 200-yard backstroke and third in the same event at 100 yards. Martin excelled in the butterfly, finishing second at 100 yards and fifth at 200 yards.

Freshman Arthur Ensign-George (Louisville, Ky.) had a pair of top five finishes in his first collegiate meet, taking fifth place in both the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle. Freshman Michael Hambleton (Lake Bluff, Ill.) took fifth place in the 1000-yard freestyle, while junior Sam Holt (Louisville, Ky.) rounded out the scoring for the Centre men with a second place finish in the 1m diving competition.

The Centre women scored 533 points to finish second, including a win over Southern Athletic Association rival Birmingham Southern. Only Washington & Lee finished with more points than the Colonels.

In relay competition, the team of juniors Cameron Beach (Greenville, S.C.) and Claire Coleman (Hurricane, W.Va.), sophomore Jacquelyn Engel (Lexington, Ky.) and freshman Annie Holmes (Louisville, Ky.) posted a third place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Beach also anchored another third place relay team as she combined with freshmen Amelia Blankenbeker (Jeffersonville, Ind.), Chloe Grove (Bucyrus, Ohio) and Emma May (Asheville, N.C.) to take third in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

All of Centre’s individual event top five performances also came courtesy of their relay members. Annie Holmeshad a pair of third place finishes in the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly and also finished fourth in the 100-yard freestyle. Chloe Grove excelled in distance races, finishing second in the 1000-yard freestyle and third in the 500-yard freestyle. Amelia Blankenbeker finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle while Cameron Beach took fifth place in the 50-yard freestyle.

In diving, junior Sarah Hayhurst (Newburgh, Ind.) picked up where she left off in her first two All-American seasons, winning both the 1m and 3m diving competitions. The Centre women also picked up a pair of second place finishes in diving as freshman Kat Greenleaf (Louisville, Ky.) took second on the 1m board while sophomore Sierra Panting (Anchorage, Alaska) finished second at three meters. Panting also took fourth on the 1m board.

The Colonels will open up conference play next week with a pair of meets at Sewanee and Berry.
