Washington State University Picks Up 1:00 Breaststroker Emily Lundgren for 2022

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Emily Lundgren of Chula Vista, CA has announced her decision to swim for the Washington State Cougars beginning in the 2022-2023 season. Lundgren is entering her senior year at Eastlake High School and she swims year-round for Sol Swim Team. She trains under the direction of Coach Steve Wiggs both in high school and club swimming.

I’m very proud to announce my verbal commitment to Washington State University and join a fantastic group of athletes under the direction of Coach Matthew Leach and the welcoming and supportive WSU coaching staff.  I already feel a part of this very special program and swim family. I am beyond grateful for the endless support I’ve received over the years from my amazing family, friends, teachers, and coaches.  I look forward to continuing my academic and athletic pursuits on this beautiful campus and contribute all I can to the successes of this team. Go Cougs!

Lundgren is a 2021 CIF San Diego Section DI champion. In April, the Eastlake High School junior competed in the 100 breast and the 200 IM, bringing home gold medals in each race. She dominated the 200 IM, touching 4 seconds ahead of the silver medalist in a time of 2:02.74. The breaststroke specialist took off on the 3rd 50 of the IM. Her 50 breast split was 2.7 seconds faster than any other swimmer in finals.

She went personal best times in both of her individual events. She went a 1:00.96 to win the women’s 100 breast, breaking both the D1 and Section record. Staci Stitts of Carlsbad High School set the previous record of 1:01.77 back in 1998.

Lundgren was also a member of Eastlake’s 200 medley and 400 free relays. She led off the free relay in 52.77 and she swam the breast leg on the medley relay. They finished 8th and 3rd, respectively.

She has been names League and District Swimmer of the year twice, and she holds multiple school records. She is a three-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and NISCA All-American, and she was named to San Diego Sports Association’s 2021 All-CIF Team for the 100 breast.

She is a 2021 Winter US Open qualifier. Her CIF 100 breast time met the qualifying standard. She had already picked up the cut in the 200 breast at the Speedo Swimvitational in March. More recently, she earned qualified for the Winter US Open in the 100 and 200-meter breast.

Top SCY Times:

  • 100 breast – 1:00.96
  • 200 breast – 2:13.48
  • 200 IM – 2:02.74
  • 400 IM – 4:22.68

Lundgren will be one of Washington State’s top breaststrokers when she joins the team in the fall of 2022. During the 2020-2021 season, she would have been the team’s fastest swimmer in the 100 breast and its second-fastest in the 200 breast and the 200 and 400 IM. Lundgren’s 100 breast time is only 0.07 seconds off of the school record of 1:00.89, which was set by Lauren Burckel at the 2020 Pac-12 Championships.

Washington State had a big breakout performance last season from sprint freestyler Chloe Larson, who won the 50 free to become the school’s first-ever Pac-12 Champion. Larson then went on to qualify for the semifinals at the US Olympic Trials in June.

The Cougars have already picked up verbal commitments from South African sprinter Kirsten de Goede, sprinter and butterflier Skylar Brgoch, and freestyler/breaststroker Lauren Wille for the class of 2026.

While Lundgren is the star of the class so far, the group that includes De Goede’s 26.5/57.4 long course sprints and Wille’s versatility is a class that could help the Cougars begin to turn the corner in a deep Pac-12 conference. The connection to freestylers, between Larson and Keiana Fountaine, another recent breakout performer for the Cougars, makes sense; but to draw in a top-level breaststroker like Lundgren gives head coach Matt Leach the opportunity to prove that he can do more than just freestylers.
