The first stop of the 2021 FINA World Cup concluded in Berlin, Germany over the weekend, where we were treated by two World Junor Records by the same swimmer.
18-year-old Matt Sates of South Africa swam lights out over the course of the 3-day meet, establishing a new WJR in the 200m IM and 200m free events in the process.
Sates, who is set to join the University of Georgia in the spring, first rocked a lifetime best of 1:51.45 to set a new mark in the 200m IM before stopping the clock in a world-class 1:40.65 to do the same in the 2free.
In that latter race, Sates held his own against the likes of Olympic multi-medalist Kyle Chalmers of Australia, with Chalmers finished runner-up just .02 off of the Aussie record in 1:40.82.
See how the duel unfolded in the race video below, with Sates racing in lane 4 with Chalmers right next doo in lane 5, while Lithuanian dynamo Danas Rapsys was also in the mix in lane 6.

Converts to a 1:30:67 SCY. Big pickup for UGA
Sounds like a bunch of jealous people here.
Jack Bauerle’s office is easily cluttered with scribbled workouts catered towards this kid when he arrives.
Do you guys think that hadn’t he swam the 400 IM he would’ve swam a 1:39?
No
Maybe 1:40 low. But at the rate he is improving, he’ll smash the WR in the next year.
Having the World Cup this year along with the ISL just proves that swim fans prefer quality over quantity. People are much more excited about Sates breaking a WJR than Dressel winning his 726384th 100 fly in the ISL.
But dressel is more excited about pocketing the 6 figures he gets from ISL over spending money out of pocket to go world cups.
And the point you’re trying to make is what exactly?
In theory. Is he getting the cash tho?
Can’t we have both? More swimming =awesome
am i doing the math wrong or chalmers turned at 100m at +0.21s above WR and not 0.11s like the timer showed??? Makes me question the validity of this times..
I did my math poorly, sorry guys
Holy hell this guy is yoked
Still trying to understand how he did this after a 4,01 in the 400im
Doope
You need a new name! It has been a snooze fest so far. Look at tv ratings or lack there of
Based on the way he swam that 200, Id say hes done some work.
there was 1 hour apart. not that bad. plenty of swimmers do triples at ISL
