SwimSwam took a trip down the road in Austin, Texas to the Texas men’s annual Orange & White intrasquad, which always has fast, suited, in-season times for mid-September. This year did not disappoint, with 2 meet records falling (1000 free, 200 free) and another 2 meet records nearly falling, the winning times each coming within .1 (200 back, 500 free). Fun to compare intrasquads/initial duals/get out swims from early season activity from different teams around the country. I see Tennessee / Texas / Florida swims posted today.
ASU’s season opening Maroon/Gold intrasquad today was a pentathalon – 5 x 100 (Fly/Back/Breast/Free/IM) with results based on added times. No seeding, athletes in same heat and lane for each discipline, four heats of women and 5 heats of men/Fly over starts resulting in about 13-15 minutes between swims, with additional 10 minute break after breaststroke heats. For a bit of additional spice a few of Bowman’s pro group participated as well (i.e. Kalisz, Litherland) It too was pretty quick.
Fly — 11 sub-:48 (10 Sun Devils + Kalisz), including Marchand… Read more »
2 new guys going 8:53 right behind David Johnston in the 1000 in September bodes well.
Just one. The other still had a 50 to go.
Nice lead off leg from Peter Larson. Seems plausible for him to drop the 500 this year and focus on the 50, 100, 200 Free. He could be on all 3 Free relays at NCAAs if his 50 & 100 are faster.
19.89! Filipovic went 20.1 which is basically his best time, and then 19.5 flying on a relay
1000 free Enyeart 8:53
50 free Filipovic 20.1, Larson 20.16, Crosby 20.5, Chan 20.5 Paulus 20.79
Chan 53.4 100 breast
I think it’s incredible with all the talent that has gone through the program that the records are all relatively young
Three possible reasons for that
1. Overall swimming is faster now than 5, 10, 15, 20 years ago.
2. It wasn’t too long ago that Texas swam very slowly in season which would include this meet.
3. I’m not sure fast suits were used 5+ years ago at this meet.
Any pro time trials and subsequent footage?!
Negative. Shaine was lamenting that Eddie wouldn’t let him swim exhibitions, even though there were 2 breaks😂 But the positive is that he will be swimming all world cup stops as well as SC Worlds
Hobson and Johnston are like the second coming of Berens and Walters. The duo are on a tear!
I mean, Texas is a 2Free factory. It’s not like the last good 2Free swimmers at Texas were Berens and Walters. How about Townley and Kibler, among others?
46.07 100 back is a PB for Carson. Previous best was set at OHSAA state.
Seems like he might be swimming himself onto the 400 Medley Relay.
Seems like he might be swimming himself
onto thea 400 Medley Relay. My thoughts exactly
Texas needs a 44 mid split there in the worst way possible. They will have the fastest 100 breast in the field and I think ZVZ or Crane can dip in the mid 44’s on the fly, Krueger on free will be good enough, but Back is where I’m worried. Hopeful that if Carson can’t pull it off that maybe Grimm can.
A little weird he didn’t swim at the Orange-White meet, but I’m really hoping a 20.5 50 back guy can swim 44 mid after another year of Eddie training.
Grimm was on deck, he’s been sick so he sat out of the meet.
Ah okay, glad it’s not anything more serious. Hope he gets better soon.
hope he gets better! Better now than in March.
