The men’s distance freestyle races were exciting to watch, coming down to the wire. Ahmed Hafnaoui earned the win in both the 1500 and 800 freestyles, as well as a second-place finish in the 400 free. Hafnaoui’s swim in the 1500 freestyle became the 2nd fastest performance in the event while his 800 free was

Many swimmers are controversial for a variety of reasons but I’ve never seen anyone against Ahmed Hafnaoui (for good reason)
Mens 1500-800-400 finally getting faster! Is Sun Yang’s mark the oldest non super suited WR besides Lochtes 200IM?
He got out touched in the 400 and said “not anymore”
0.02 sec from sweeping the distance free events
How is it he is less than a second away from the world record in the 400 and 1500 but five seconds away in the 800
That world record is crazy
We will be living on a pension before that 800 free WR gets broken
Honestly, Zhang Lin’s WR performance in the 800 is probably more of a candidate for project immortal than the current 100 breast men’s WR. Imo it would be the 800, Peirsol’s 200 back, and Beidermann’s 200 free. Though I still think the latter is likely to fall to Popovici, despite this hiccup at the 2023 worlds. I think we will see some 57’s low 100 breast in Paris.
His second 400m would’ve won this year’s US trials, after a first 400 which would’ve gotten third.
I mean it’s one of the USAs weakest events but still…
Can really say that with any country though.
M 800 free
W 800 free
W 200 fly
W 1500 free
M 200 free
M 100 breast
M 200 back
That’s how I would rate WRs by toughness to include records broken since the super suit era. Crazy that both M/W 800s are so out there.
Definitely agree about the W 800 & 1500 free. Initially I was just thinking about the M records because of Hafnaoui. I’m actually wondering if Ledecky’s 800 WR could equal or outlast the record set by Evans. Maybe world swimming in 2023 is just too competitive at this point for this to be a thing, but interesting to think about…
I’d put M2 back way higher, maybe 2 or 3 but it’s hard to put it ahead of the ledecky distance records or the M800. W2fly is crazy but it’s also hard to compare since it’s been kind of a weak event internationally for a while now
Or a candidate for project WADA
Supersuit + PEDs is an unbeatable combo
All three of these events were incredibly exciting races; the best of the meet IMO. And probably the best 1500 race I’ve ever seen.
What an awesome meet he had. Great racing every time he hit the water
