The British relay of Dan Wallace, Robert Renwick, Calum Jarvis, and James Guy fought back from an early deficit to the United States, Russia, and Australia, overtaking all three squads on the final leg of the race for the Gold medal. James guy dove in for the final leg in fourth place and appeared to be fighting for bronze. As the race went on, however, he continued passed both the Australians and the Russians and continued to gain on the Americans. In the final 50, Guy passed Michael Weiss and got his hand on the wall first for a final time of 7:04.33. He had the fastest split of the day, brining the relay home in 1:44.74.

Guy: 1:44.74.
United States went with Ryan Lochte, Conor Dwyer, Reed Malone, and Michael Weiss, but they didn’t have enough to hold off Guy. Lochte and Dwyer both split 1:45’s while Malone and Weiss were 1:46’s.
The second fastest split of the day came from Germany’s Paul Biedermann. He was the only other swimmer to split under 1:45 with his time of 1:44.80.

We have some great swimmers in some events, (Guy, Peaty, etc) hopefully we can develop a bit more depth with people finalling in many events. Some events, such as the butterfly events and the 200 back, we don’t have anyone remotely competitive on the men’s side, and not much on the women’s either. Hopefully that’ll be turned around soon.
Despite some prior difficulties and performance issues in prior years, now is a new day and UK swimming looks very bright going into Rio. This is one country making a big statement in Kazan. Well done.
