Watch British Ace Adam Peaty Blast 57.94 100 Breaststroke In London

2024 AQUATICS GB SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS (OLYMPIC TRIALS)

Day one of the 2024 Aquatics GB Olympic Trials saw the return of Adam Peaty in the men’s 100m breaststroke.

29-year-old Peaty busted out a swim of 58.53 in the morning heats as the sole sub-minute swimmer in the field. Then tonight the Loughborough ace went even further, dipping under the 58-second barrier to stop the clock in a 57.94 stunner.

Peaty opened in 26.80 and brought it home in 31.14 to grab the gold and secure his spot on the British roster for this summer’s Olympic Games.

Commonwealth Games champion James Wilby snagged the silver medal position in the race, posting 59.47. That fell painstakingly shy of the 59.45 Olympic qualification standard set by Aqutics GB.

Edinburgh’s Archie Goodburn rounded out the podium in 1:00.03, a new lifetime best.

As for Peaty, his performance tonight is the fastest on the planet in 2024 and keeps him ranked #2 in the world on the season. Only China’s Qin Haiyang has been faster with the 57.69 notched at the Asian Games.

However, Peaty’s outing at these championships marks his 21st result under the 58-second threshold and represents his quickest time since 2021.

Additionally, both his 58.53 and 57.94 times from today surpassed the 58.60 he logged in the semi-finals of the event at this year’s World Championships. There in Doha, Peaty ultimately settled for bronze in 59.10.

After the race, Peaty said in his on-deck interview, “I’m so grateful that I’m back here and that I didn’t give up. I think that’s a message to a lot of the young people who are in the crowd today.

“We’re coming back and I’m happy with that.

“I’m blessed, I’m healthy, I’ve got good talent. I just want to race the best in the world…that’s a good job to have.

“You’ve got to put it in perspective. I don’t overthink anymore.”

Peaty is referring to the mental issues he encountered last year which rendered him withdrawn from the 2023 British Championships and that year’s World Championships. He’s been steadily on the rise and patiently persevering to come back to the form he put on display today.

So happy and excited to see that all of the stars from the last couple years that took a step back are coming back in full force and showing everyone that you CAN struggle and still find your way back to the top. Simone, Caeleb, Peaty (and possibly Milak?). It’s a great model for younguns.

Now that Peaty is back, the male contingent from USA Swimming won’t win any gold medals at the 2024 Summer Olympics including relays.

Men’s 4 x 100 FR-R to AUS or ITA
Men’s 4 x 200 FR-R to GBR
Men’s 4 x 100 M-R to GBR or CHN or AUS

USA Swimming finished third at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in the men’s 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay to AUS and ITA.

USA Swimming barely got within a second of GBR in the men’s 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships. Who on the men’s side from USA Swimming is going to post a sub 1:44 split?

Tbf Carson Foster just did exactly post a 1:43 at Doha World Champs, plus Hobson, Kibler, Armstrong, Jake Mitchell and co. all appear to be in good form (1:44-1:45 low), so I don’t think it’s a stretch to say the US could win.

USA Swimming managed a third place finish to China and South Korea in the M 4 x 200 FR-R at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships. How is that progress?

When you do your pick ems later in the year you should do them based on performances at Doha 👍

The 2024 is two second slower because their anchor leg goes 1:47 if I’m not mistaken.

Quite possible they don’t win any but very likely they win at least 1.

I would say the US men losing every relay is about the same chance as Aus women sweeping every relay. Could certainly happen, wouldn’t bet on it.

The Aussie women swept the relays at the last Summer Olympics.

Idk if peaty changes anything, American breaststrokers were probably not getting through Qin in the first place

edit: nvm I missed that it was about the 4×100 medley. But idk I still don’t see a complete shut out happening

Nic Fink and Ryan Murphy are no longer spring chickens. Unless you can guarantee Caeleb Dressel will be on World Record form in the M 100 FL, all bets are off.

Or maybe even 4/4? What’s the odds of Held swimming freestyle leg?

Lisa

The freestyle leg is probably gonna be between Chris Giuliano or Jack Alexy and I know trials doesn’t even started yet and this is just early prediction but based on form I would be shocked if it’s not one of them.

Didn’t Ryan Murphy won 100 back at world champs last year and almost goes 52 flat leading the medley relay or am I missing something .

I wouldn’t go that far and they have the chance to win all three relays and the likely one is probably medley relays and the 4×100 is gonna be close one between multiple teams and that includes the US and the 4×200 probably gonna be Great Britain as the favorite but US has a good chance to win .

Yes they are the favorites but that doesn’t mean the US can’t challenged for the win.

12 months ago you were certain that finke wouldn’t medal in the 800 or 1500, so you really aren’t good at making these sorts of predictions. finke’s still a gold medal threat in both btw

A very clear “statement swim”. The actual magnitude of said statement will only be clear once we have Trials swims from CHN/USA & a couple of European nations (ITA/NED) but it’s certainly going to resonate.

The most encouraging aspect is his progress – A few months ago a lot of people felt he was “washed”, but he has really proved them wrong. I still make Qin a sound favourite, and expect 57low from him, but I’m no longer convinced Peaty can’t get back below 57.5 himself… In fact it wouldn’t at all surprise me if he did by summer.

Gonna be so funny if we get the usual stars like Peaty, Dressel, Milak winning their events again in Paris

Not Milak, Dressel may get minor medals in the butterfly and 50 but he won’t make the team in the 100

You would have said the same about Peaty one day ago.
All of these three swimmers could be 1-2s off their PBs in their best event and still be gold contender.

Lisa

Well I do think Dressel could probably gonna be contender in 100 fly and certainly not gonna count him out in 50 free and he still need only to be in top 4 to make the relay team in 100 free which is possible.

Haha. In all seriousness I think he will swim 100BR,50FR, 100FL, and 200IM at trials. I think he makes the team in 100BR and 200IM and just misses in the 50FR and 100FL.

Michael Andrew is done with the M 150 IM, don’t kid yourself.

Do you realize that Michael Andrew failed to qualify for the “B” final let alone the “A” final in the M 100 BR at the 2023 Phillips 66 National Championships? Don’t let SwimSwam’s obsessive man crush cloud the facts.

A small correction on Peaty’s top 10 times since Tokyo. At the 2022 British Champs he went 58:58 in the finals and 59:58 in the heats.
