Match 6 of the 2021 season of the International Swimming League gave fans a surprise match-up between IM juggernauts Daiya Seto of the Tokyo Frog Kings and Caeleb Dressel of the Cali Condors.
Dressel is the American, U.S. Open, and NCAA Record holder in the 200 short course yards version of the race, as well as the 100 short course meters IM World Record holder. Despite this, prior to Saturday, he had never raced the 200 IM in short course meters. In his event debut, Dressel posted a 1:51.14, only losing to Tokyo’s Seto by 0.02. Dressel’s swim also makes him the 2nd-fastest American ever in the event behind World Record holder Ryan Lochte who set the mark in 2012.
Dressel chose not to swim the second day of the match due to illness, which could mean his day 1 performances could have been better still.

Lot of people saying many things but after 5 or 7 years one will be compared to phelps who is the Goat and for others there name will hardly be remembered
Not to be on an MA bandwagon, but you’d think the SCM 200 IM would be the perfect race for him. His underwaters aren’t great, but they’re pretty good, and he’d finish right about the time rigor mortis usually sets in for LCM. I mean, if he can go 1:55 low LCM dying as bad as he does, you’d think he’d be 1:49 or better if he worked on it for SCM.
Dressel just walks in and puts up a disgustingly fast swim in like his 6th best event, man. 49.28 in the 100IM last year, I really think with some more racing experience at 200, he could realistically be sub 1:49, whereas Seto seems close to maxed out at 1:51.1.
If Seto could close better than a 27 that would be nice lol
Doesnt Lochte have a 1.50.x from dubai in 2010? This would make Dressel’s the 3rd fastest swim…
If he swam this 200 IM already somewhat sick that makes this even more impressive.
Yea, even if he didn’t have symptoms that day it definitely still would’ve impacted him. I’ve had a few meets where I swam below myself as felt healthy while racing, but the next day woke up as sick as a dog and figured that might’ve been why I wasn’t swimming well. It might’ve not hurt him too much in the 200 IM, but I think this explains what happened in relay.
Can we talk about 27.03 backstroke leg by lochte 2012?
It’s scary to see Dressel go that fast in his 1st 200 im. Last year he went from 51.mid to 49.2 in the 100 over the season. If he keeps on swimming this the world record is his.
That 27.03 on the backstroke leg by lochte in 2012. Amazing
