Watch: Cate & Bronte Campbell Discuss Rio Aspirations

The Campbell sisters were interviewed via 60 Minutes Australia and it was posted on their twitter feed (see above). In the interview Cate and Bronte discuss their relationship as siblings, if they would resent it if the other was to beat them at the Olympics, and their aspirations for Rio.

They start out by discussing how people always ask if they fight, and on trips with the national team people always expect a fight to break out, but it just doesn’t happen. Cate eludes this to the fact that some people might be jealous that they’re living the dream of competing with their sibling while many start out that way but don’t pan out.

When asked if they can truly say they wouldn’t resent it if the other one beat them, Bronte replied “Yeah because, I wouldn’t expect Cate to go easy on me…neither of us would give an inch.”

When asked what she wants to take home from Rio, Bronte cites she wants to perform to the best of her ability, and put up lifetime best times. When it’s mentioned she didn’t mention gold in her answer, Bronte answers “if you do your lifetime best and someone happens to get their hands on that wall 0.01 of a second in front of you but you’ve done your best it doesn’t make you a failure.”

When the same question comes to Cate, she talks about how she is looking to have her best Olympic experience, as she has already competed in Beijing and London. She notes how she finished well in Beijing after a rocky start, and had a good start in London, but hopes everything will go smoothly throughout the competition this time.

Cate then goes on to say:

“All athletes would be lying if they said they weren’t chasing that gold medal”, but then cites a quote from the movie Cool Runnings: “If you’re not enough without an Olympic gold medal, you’ll never be enough with it”, and then finishes with “yes, I want it. Yes, I’m gonna go after it with every fibre of my being. But if I don’t get there, for whatever reason, if someone else gets their hand on the wall first, I’m okay with that.”

The Campbell sisters have both qualified for Rio in the 50 and 100 metre freestyle events. Both recently competed at the Japan Open in Tokyo, with Cate tying her world #1 time with a 52.38 in the 100 freestyle.
