It wasn’t to be for Cesar Cielo— he swam under 22 seconds in the 50 free for the 52nd time in his career, but he was ultimately edged by both Bruno Fratus and Italo Duarte in the final. Fratus and Duarte will represent Brazil in Rio in the 50 free, an event which was Cielo’s last chance to qualify for Rio individually.
The sprinting was impressive on the women’s side, as Etiene Medeiros swam a 24.64 to secure her spot in this event in Rio. Lorrane Cristina rocked a 24.95, but it wasn’t enough to knock out Graciele Herrmann from the individual spot. Herrmann posted a 24.92 at the Brazil Open, the other Brazilian Olympic qualifying meet, so she’ll be headed to Rio despite finishing 3rd tonight behind Medeiros and Cristina. See all the race videos from tonight below, courtesy of SwimItUp.
The 100 fly went to Vinicius Lanza, who won the event in a 52.75. The finish was incredibly tight, and despite Lanza’s win, he had to go faster than 52.17 in order to qualify for the Brazilian team in this event for Rio.

Role model for using PEDs?
You will always be the best sprinter and a role model for a lot of people, Cesar. I knew that you were going to be an excellent swimmer ever since we raced together at my last ncaas back in 2007. Your mentality to train and race has always been exceptional. I am glad to see how far you have taken your swimming man! you had an awesome career, you should be proud of it!:)
