After the elimination of Joao De Lucca and Dylan Carter in the opening round, six high profile men remained and would battle for four finals spots in round two. Bruno Fratus led the pack after round one with his sizzling 21.74. Only Kristian Gkolomeev and Andriy Govorov hold best times faster than Fratus’ opening swim.
MEN’S ROUND TWO
- Michael Andrew, 22.03
- Bruno Fratus, 22.15
- Shinri Shioura, 22.24
- Kristian Gkolomeev, 22.32
Andriy Govorov, 22.42Michael Chadwick, 22.86
Michael Andrew showed consistency to take over the top spot in the second round, dropping his opening round swim by .01 to go 22.03. While Andrew followed in the footsteps of Margo Geer, moving up from 2nd to 1st with a near identical swim, Fratus had a similar result to Madison Kennedy, falling from 1st to 2nd while adding four tenths in the process. The Brazilian’s 22.15 got him into the final easily, but raised questions on what he left for the third swim of the day.
Japan’s Shinri Shioura dropped his first round swim by over two tenths to take 3rd in 22.24, and Greece’s Gkolomeev snagged the last finals spot in 22.32. Govorov (22.42) and American Michael Chadwick (22.86) were eliminated.
Heading into the final it shaped up to be a showdown between Fratus and Andrew, with Gkolomeev a chance at challenging them if he wasn’t giving it full gas in the first two rounds. Though Shioura had a good swim in this round, he would need to get down to around his best time (21.88) to challenge for the title.
I think one of the shifts in starts that has happened in the past few years is people are staying underwater to maintain the speed longer, and I think MA has definitely noticed. He’s the last one to the surface here and, from what I can tell, comes up ahead.
If Andrew beats Adrian in the 50 this summer, my guess is it’ll be because of the start. Adrian’s got a good dive and carries momentum through the water extremely well, but he didn’t grow up working the dolphin kicks to the extent that many younger swimmers have. For example, Caeleb Dressel’s vertical helps his start a lot, but I think his start would just be a bit better than… Read more »
