Last night Sydney Pickrem won one of the closest head-to-head matchups at these Trials, taking down Canadian record holder Emily Overholt in the 400m IM to secure her spot on the Canadian squad for this year’s Olympic Games.
Pickrem took the lead from Overholt on the breaststroke leg where she split a very solid 1:18.16 which put her in front. While Overholt did come back on her a little on the final 100, Pickrem was too far out in front and was able to get her hand on the wall first.
Stretching out, Pickrem touched in at 4:38.34 to beat Overholt’s 4:38.50.
Regardless of their placings, both were under the FINA ‘A’ standard meaning that they both will be nominated for a spot on Canada’s Olympic team.
The two swimmers have taken the reign on medley swimming in Canada. At just 18, both swimmers have solidified their places as Pickrem owns the 200m IM Canadian record and Overholt owns the 400m IM national mark.
With plenty of racing still set to take place in Toronto, Overholt will be racing in the 200m freestyle final tonight and either the 200m IM or 200m butterfly on Friday.
