MEN’S 1500 FREESTYLE – FINAL
- Gregorio Paltrinieri (ITA) – 14:34.04, *European Record, *Championship Record
- Gabriele Detti (ITA) – 14:48.75
- Mykhaylo Romanchuk (UKR) – 14:50.33
In an incredible display of pacing, Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri successfully defended his European Championships title in the men’s 1500m freestyle in spades. Out-splitting his previous European Record of 14:39.67 set in 2015 right from the beginning, Paltrinieri was actually beneath Chinese swimmer Sun Yang’s world record pace before falling off with about 300m left to go.
Charging down the pool to lead wire-to-wire, Paltrinieri scorched the competition, which included his teammate, the 400m freestyle champion from earlier in this meet Gabriele Detti, who touched almost 14 seconds behind to snag his 2nd silver (14:48.75).
Rounding out the top 3 was Mykhailo Romanchuk giving the Ukrainian squad some more hardware with is bronze medal-garnering time of 14:50.33. That blasts a new Ukrainian National Record, laying waste to the 14:57.82 Romanchuk threw down last summer at the FINA World Championships.
For Paltrinieri, his outing in London tonight checks in as the 2nd-fastest performance of all time, sitting 2nd only to Sun Yang’s record of 14:31.02. He now sits atop the world rankings throne, overtaking the previous owner Mack Horton (AUS) by a wide margin. Look for a full split break-down in a separate post.

His kick is just the way it should be for a guy who is not a great kicker. The reason why he does not swim the 400m I think.
It’s silly to use your big leg muscles on something that only uses oxygen and does not help your swim. Great splitting, great arms, great swim.
ITA 1-2, great job, swimmers and coaches.
Wow he has a ONE beat kick until the last 50. What the heck??
And it’s a bit of a crossover kick to boot
Amazing swim!! Under 14:30 is pretty hard but nothing is impossible. Remenber when Sun Yang finished his last 50m in 25.68 in London. That was insane.
This guy doesn’t swim, he pulls. What a show of strength!!!
anyone have the video for the entire race? thanks

thanks!
Really great performance! Anyone else think his crawl technique is rather odd …?
The kick is atrocious but he stands very tall on the water, his back almost completely dry, and has a good catch, plus of course a horse’s heart and lungs. The two guys in the Italian video commentary I linked below at one point say that his odd asymmetric stroke has been studied and they determined it help his flotation.
Was fortunately able to watch it live & it was a great swim. No one there to push him, either. He was very much ahead of the next two, both of whom also swam respectable times. I agree that Paltrinieri will be the one to watch come August.
Amazingly, the gap between his fastest and slowest 50 was only 0.39 (excluding the first and last ones). Wow!
