WATCH: Gretchen Walsh, Kate Douglass 100 Kick Under 1:00 in Practice

While Recently Filming at the University of Virginia, one of Todd DeSorbo‘s speed practices included a couple 100 kicks for time. Freshman standout Gretchen Walsh was sharing a lane with NCAA Champion Kate Douglass, and the 2 were ‘strongly encouraged’ by DeSorbo to break 1:00 in their final 100 kick of the day.

Now, let’s recognize the elephant in the room: DeSorbo calls out 54.2 for Gretchen’s 100 kick. Timing it ourselves (and looking at the video frames), our estimate is that it’s about a 54.9-55.1. So, while DeSorbo’s time may be a bit fast in actuality, let’s not miss the bigger picture here: that is insanely fast. Douglass, after having been out sick the day before, kicks to a 59.0, which is also incredible in its own right.

Todd sent me times from a 100 kick with a board today, and he wanted y’all to know Gretchen went 59, Paige Madden went 1:01, Kate Douglass went 1:03, and Lexi Cuomo went 1:04.

Lol of course he did. Maybe add a second to compensate for his mysteriously fast watch.

Of course this is impressive, but it was really 40 yards of kick and 60 yards of underwaters.

I know they’re not wearing fins, but when I was in college as a mediocre D2 swimmer, the only time I ever broke 2:00 in a 200 was kicking with fins.

I timed it 3 separate times and got 55.2 every time for Gretchen and 1:00.4-59.9 for Douglass is hard to tell when you can’t see when she pushes off but something around there but still very impressive

Too much underwaters.

Show me what you can do with a board in LCM.

And they rarely let you use a kickboard, either.
